First Kid this morning!

Very excited, this morning we had our first kid born on the farm. She was born to a pair of goats we hand bottled two springs ago. Went out to feed the animals this morning and the Momma Goat "Jill" wasn't out with the rest of them. After a quick sweep of the area I found her laying in a mound of grass hay inside one of the round feeders with a little nose poking up from beside her. Of course today is a bitter cold day and this was about 7am this morning, about -13 and wind gust up to 25 miles an hour. Ran inside and got my wife.. by the time we made it back out mom was getting a drink of water and the kid was walking around and was pretty well dried off. Still with as cold as it is, we moved them into a small shelter for now, with fresh food, water, lots of grass hay bedding to munch on, and we even put in a heat lamp (securely fastened of course) Checked mom and milk was flowing, watched kid to make sure he was sucking, everything is looking good so far, kid looks big and healthy, think it's a girl, wife is calling her "Valentine", headed off to work at 12:30 with wife home to keep an eye on them.

Couple questions:

This is moms first time having kids, and she gave birth probably a little before 7am, but she still looks pretty big around noon, is this normal? I told my wife to keep a good eye on her incase there's another one coming but would there be such a lapse in time in-between them if there is?

Secondly, based on the information above and this being our first kid born on the farm is there any glaring no-no's that I did? Though I have read, and read, and thought I was prepared, my thinker was on the fritz in all the excitement.

Thanks for your help - Mike

Well, hopefully by now this is all resolved, but you can "bounce" their belly to see if there are any kids left-kids feel like pokey bony parts and placenta is just kinda lumpy bumpy softer stuff. If a goat is not acting uncomfortable like she's having contractions or trying to push, she probably doesn't have any more. Check that she passed placenta. They usually eat them, so likely if nothing is hanging out of her (other than blood/fluids dripping), then that's likely what happened. Don't forget to dip kids' navels with iodine/disinfectant.

Mom looks good and is acting normal, I did do the bounce test, and it doesn't feel like anything else is in there, but it's my first time so no guarantees. lol
