First freshener, no udder

I have a first freshener who had been born on our farm last February and sold at weaning. Long story short, the farmer who bought her had her with a buck since August. I bought her back at the end of December as he needed to sell. She appeared in good health and was well taken care of. Although bred young, she was a good size and always had been (a 9lber at birth). So, we didn't have a due date and I was checking several times a day. Ligaments, udder development etc. She ended up delivering what looks to be a premature singleton yesterday who we discovered dead. Only 4 lbs. eyes appeared to still be fused. Disappointing. But the baffling thing is that she has no udder, and only drops of milk. Gave her oxytocin, still nothing. Her mom is a great producer here and her dad is well bred as well. She's a alpine/saanen cross. What else can I try to encourage milk production? And any idea why there would be none?

Many ff who deliver prematurely will need to be rebred before they will make an udder and produce milk.

Ugh. I don't know how premature she was, anyone know when he eyes open? Otherwise, didn't appear premature except for small size.

You could keep milking and see if she will produce for you. Try milking several times a day for awhile and see if that stimulates her. She probably won't be terribly productive this lactation, but you could at least keep weight off her and she's not sitting around like a lazy bump on the log, she at least can contribute something. If she happens to have another cycle this season, you could certainly breed her back.
