Well, it would depend on how many does you've got, how many of the doelings are the offspring of your current herd sire, and whether or not you are a fan of line/inbreeding. I am not a fan of line/inbreeding so I replace bucks as necessary to avoid breeding them back to their daughters. I always have at least 2 bucks so I can breed one bucks offspring back to the other, unrelated buck. As for company for your buck - that is up to you. I know that is something that is spouted on most goat forums but, IMHO, it is a bunch of nonsense. My goats are a business - not a hobby. As such I do not keep non-producing animals around - namely wethers. At my place it is not uncommon for one buck to be penned alone while the other buck is breeding, and said lone buck has never caused any problems, gone off feed, or shown any other signs of being deprived in any way.
