Every day, I love my goats more.
Some people have started calling me "the crazy goat lady," and I have to admit I do feel pretty funny about it after years of trying to fit in with "normal" society, but it's worth it.
I love feeding them and milking them and even cleaning the barn. I just love, love, love them! The only other animals I've ever felt this way about have been horses, but I board my horses.
I'm already getting a little anxious about breeding them. Five of them have been bred before so I'm not too nervous about them but I'm nervous about my little Calico. This will be her first time being bred. She's a Nigerian/Oberhasli mix and I'm breeding her to a Nigerian - so hopefully the babies won't be too big for her. Everybody in the family just loves that little goat. When family comes to visit, they all want to hold Calico. Of course now she's getting too big to hold....but she's still a spoiled rotten little pet.
We've decided to use the milk room as a birthing room - lots of light in there, shelves to keep all the supplies organized, and it's the cleanest warmest place in the barn. We'll put a divider in during labor so the goats can't get to the shelves.
I don't know what in the world we're going to do with the milk from six goats. Our girls are currently pretty low producers because we bought them from a guy who had more than he needed and he wasn't really milking them, then we moved them and their production dropped even more. It's going to be interesting to see how much milk we get next year.
