Sick goat

Goat kidded in march. She has been recently staying alone in the barn. Today while on the stand to check her over i noticed one side of her udder was swollen and red. Stripped the inflamed side to find stringy glumpy milk. It. Was difficult to get a steam started. Mastitis?

Btw she still has her kid with her and I have not milked her since march. She and other 2 moms with kids are skinnier than usual. I wormed.

Also justtreated chickens for cocci

Yes, sounds like mastitis. First, take a sample of the infected milk (see sticky at top of this forum for instructions), and send it in for testing.

While you are waiting for the results, you need to get the infusions at the feed store and follow instructions on the box.

I'd also get a strong antibiotic from the veterinarian, if you can.

If you can't get an antibiotic from the vet, give penicillin or one of the tetracyclines. HOWEVER, without testing, you are shooting in the dark because you won't know which bacteria it is.

Testing is very important.

Yeah. <sigh>

Alice has given you the proper protocol. Nothing more to add than my sincere wishes for a quick and complete recovery.

I know I am going to feel the wrath of you serious goat folks. I also have to believe there are many out there like me. People who are looking for the best treatment advice (thank you to all who take the time to share your knowledge and wisdom) but for whatever reason can't afford to go all the way.

That said, I stripped the side affected and am now getting no milk. I am giving her 3cc LA200 once a day for 3 days. She is up and looking and acting much better.

What can I expect best case, if the la200 and stripping licked the infection?

Thanks

I would keep checking for any liquid in the affected side, removing all of it if possible.

Were you able to do any infusions? I fear that you may lose production in that side.

I'm not going to flame you. We are all struggling with something. HUGGS.

Keep taking her temperature, too.
