MDGA Membership - Worth it?

I am dabbling with the idea of getting a membership and herd name/tattoo with the MDGA. I almost always have some FF bred to a Nigerian Dwarf buck which means I have some 1st Gen Mini LaManchas available every Spring. My idea behind the MDGA membership/herd name/tattoo is I would be able to offer MDGA registered kids to those whom are interested.

I have heard the MDGA is very nice to deal with and I know a few of you hear have I believe MDGA membership? Do you think that would be something worth my time doing? I am perfectly fine selling the kids for pets/milkers but I thought maybe being able to register would offer an extra edge or bring a different crowd in to buy?

What do you think?

Depends on your market. In my part of South Texas, it makes no difference at all.

I belong to MDGA & tey have always been really nice & helpful. I also like their rules & breed standards & the guidelines they follow.
A couple of the other mini registries I wouldn't use because I think they are too lax on what they register.
I think you'd get more money for your kids.

I'd go for it!

I think registration lends inherent value to the animals because you can track history information and usually participate in production or conformation competitions/evaluations. Anything that lends value to an animal makes them LESS likely to end up with a low pricetag and in the hands of bad owners, IMO.

I agree Dona, I used to breed Mini LaManchas back when I was younger, well I dabbled in them. I never registered with the MDGA because back then though I had thought about it. Now since I don't technically breed Mini LaManchas I never worried about it but I started thinking about getting a membership this year.

It hardly costs anything to sign up and to keep the membership it is only $20 a year. I am not sure how much it costs to register an animal, I didn't look into that. But I thought this would give people the chance to register if they want or have me register. I don't know that I would register every kid...maybe all the does kids? I haven't thought about that yet, it depends on just how much it costs to register.

I think it would be worth it to you especially being in the Northwest there is quite a bit of interest in minis. With membership registrations are only like $4.00. If you come up to WA in June they hold a nice MDGA show each year with 3 rings and use ADGA judges. We went this year because we had our mini Guernseys. There were plenty of mini Lamanchas and mini Nubians to have them separately sanctioned.

Thank you Poppy Patch for the input! I am actually looking at getting a buck from your herd. Well not YOUR herd but he was from your herd . I will know on Monday if I am getting him providing tests come back clean.

I feel like you are right because of where I live this would help add value to the kids. And like Dona said you can track who the kids go to and where they came from. I just looked up what is costs to register and that is totally worth it to me.

His name is Poppy Patch CM Stuart. He is a 4yr old right now and he lives with a gal in Eugene, OR. She is having to cut down on her herd and if we do well at the show this weekend he will be coming to my farm .

I plan on using him for my first freshening does and those would be them MDGA registered kids.

Nice! Stuart is very sweet also since he was raised as a bottle-baby in the house. He has a lot of milk in his lines. Here is a photo of a half sister of his.

You don't have to register kids you sell, just send them with an application for registration.

Chances are, you don't even have to join to register kids. They might not have your herdname, but they'd be registered and you'd be listed as their breeder. That way it's free for you, as all you have to do is send the kid on with a reg app at sale.

Wow she has a beautiful udder! I poked around your website this morning looking up some of the goats related to him. Very nice animals, I am excited about hopefully buying Stuart. Of course if I bring him home I will be posting some photos of the lovely boy .
