How to tell if you have an emergency

Here's a page from Cornell University about assessing a goat crisis.

There's lots of things you could pick up doing mouth to mouth on kids. However in our small, intensely managed farms, I would bet we're either aware of whats going on in our herd or are exposed to it anyway. I would imagine it's mostly used on newborns, and newborns born without breathing may be suffering from an abortive disease. You don't really want to give mouth to mouth to an animal covered in birthing slime that is dying from the result of an abortive disease.

I tasted gangrene mastitis milk once (before I knew what was going on, before it was bloody) and lived... lol I have done mouth to mouth twice. Once on a newborn (wasn't aborted- turned out he was bleeding out internally) and once on a kid that got smothered. Neither had a chance. True on the abortive diseases, blech.
