BOSE question

I am helping out a young gal who lives close to me. I need to know if it will be okay to give everyone in her herd a shot of BOSE now and then again in a month or so?

She has never given anyone BOSE in her herd before and I know everyone really should get a shot. The does are bred and due starting in two months, would it be okay to get them their first shot right now to get them started and then again 2 weeks before kidding?

I haven't come up with this before because my herd has always been given BOSE shots on time. We are also copper bolusing everyone (she already has been doing that) so I figured it would be a good time to get everyone their BOSE as well.

I'd go ahead and hit everyone now; not sure about the does due to kid out, though.

Depends on your area and your feed.

I just copper bolus and BoSe 1 month pre-kidding. Repeat 1 month pre-breeding. Minerals have high amounts of SE, it's in my feed as well.

Dona in my herd I BOSE prebreeding and pre kidding. This girl has never BOSE'd anyone in her herd. So I want to get everyone up on their levels. So I need to know if it is safe to BOSE now and then again in 2 months on all the pregnant does.

She wouldn't be giving BOSE again until next Spring after these shots otherwise. I want to make sure the newborn babies are covered as well. If need be the babies can all be given a shot of BOSE at birth to cover them.

Does she have SE in her minerals? Chances are she does. Depending on feed, it is likely there as well. I don't see the purpose of the twice dosing as it likely won't make any positive difference, but I doubt it will do anything bad besides cost more.

She doesn't have any loose mineral out and they are currently just on pasture.

I started giving my does bo-se 6 weeks and 2 weeks pre-kidding (I used to just use 3-4 weeks pre) and I can honestly say that my kids were much "smarter" this year than previous years about sucking and had no leg issues where before I've had slight loose hocks. I have had Right Now Onyx mineral out free choice always, so nothing changed there. Where I live is very selenium deficient, though.

We live in a very selenium deficient area and my doe who is due in August is now getting weekly bo-se shots, daily Kop-sel, and free choice Onyx minerals.

My vet says Bose only stays in their systems in critical levels for about 30 days. So two shots 4-6 weeks apart should be ok if you think its necessary. I have had sick goats that have had it once a month till they were back up to par. Its a great immune booster. But usually I stick to twice yearly(pre-kidding and pre-breeding), along with their copper boluses.

Thank for that info Emily! I didn't know that so now that is filed away in my brain . I know two of the does are from a rescue situation and probably never had a BOSE shot in their life, the others I don't believe are up to date on their BOSE either.

Just make sure she knows when giving shots that *any* shot at any time can cause a reaction so she should have epinephrine on hand and ready. In all the years of goats and cattle, I have yet to see a reaction, but it *can* happen and if not prepared.........
