Shortage of alfalfa pellets

I feed my goats a small amount of alfalfa pellets.

They are sold out ALL OVER this region.

This stinks.

I borrowed a bag from a goat owner friend.

No prediction from the distributor about the next shipment.

I spoke with a farmer about his hay and he told me this year will be tough due to the crazy weather. From one week to the next all alfalfa hay on cl was gone and then we've had storms so I know 2nd cutting has been delayed. I also think a lot of alfalfa will be going west to help with the crop deficiencies there. Oats too have gone up recently. Maybe wise to stock up early this year.

I had to start using an alfalfa based feed because my does refuse to eat the alfalfa pellets or hay no matter the brand.
Sr horse feeds, complete mare and foal feeds and purinia horse and pony as well as Purinia Jr feed all are alfalfa based just in case you might can use that information

Thanks. I'll be calling around tomorrow to locate pellets, but I may have to go with your suggestions. Bless you.

What about Chaffhay? I know it's not a pellet but it's alfalfa.

Don't know about alfalfa pellets, but the price of rabbit feed here has gone way up. It increased a bunch about 3 years ago when grain prices went up, but they have leveled or fallen. I asked the mill manager what was causing the increased cost, and he said there was a real shortage of alfalfa meal this Spring and the price had risen severely. Since (good) rabbit pellets are predominately alfalfa, the price of feed has almost doubled since this time last year.

They are even making a new feed which uses a lot of cotton seed hulls to keep the cost down. (Don't be tempted if you are a rabbit breeder, the stuff is junk)

It looks as if this is going to be a trend. First one feedstuff increases, then when people switch to something else that increases. One would think that price would go back down when there are good years for grain etc., but it never seems to. About the only thing that has gone back down around here is hay. That may change as, although it is a great year for growing hay, no one can get it harvested.

I hear what you are saying. On the cottonseed hull feed.... I wouldn't feed that, ever. I worked for a cotton farmer, and I know what they put on those plants during the growing season and right before picking the cotton. I don't want it in my goats or my food chain.
