Trial by Fire

What a flipping whirlwind. Our first kidding was on Sunday and the first kid presented tail & butt first. I pulled him and he was pretty weak. Didn't stand for close to 3 hours and refused to latch on mom or a bottle.

I had to tube him for the first 36 hours (again, never done that before). I had a friend from an animal rescue come last night from about 10:00pm-1:30 in the morning to help us with him. Gave him Selenium/Vitamin E gel + Vitamin B injection. Listened to his lungs and he did have pneumonia.

I got him to take his first bottle today. It was like a light bulb moment and he finally got it. Rescue friend said to treat pneumonia with PCN and breeder contact said Duramyacin. Went to TSC and couldn't find the PCN I wanted. I decided to leave and take him to the vet. They had a walk in clinic for $35 and I figured it would be good to get an rx abx.

**This is where is REALLY gets hairy.**

They gave him 2 injections at the same time -- Draxxin and an antihistamine. He screamed bloody murder after the injections. Vet thought he seemed dehydrated and gave him fluids. All of this happened within 3-5 minutes. When they gave him back to me, he couldn't stand. All 4 legs splayed outwards and he kept falling flat on his belly. He was shaking a lot but it wasn't a seizure. He apparently had a reaction to the abx. They immediately gave him Dex. His temp went from 102.6 to 104.3 to 105 to 106.4. He was gasping for air and they lasered his neck to reduce swelling. Put him in a bath of cold water. His temperature finally came back down and he started standing again. They worked on him for close to 2 hours.

The good part is that they only charged me $70 total and that was for my take home meds. All the meds administered there, fluids, and lasering was free. I left with 8 doses of a nasal pneumonia vaccination, a big bottle of Bo-Se, a third bottle of Recovery antihistamine, and 25-30 needles/syringes. Score, eh?

Luckily, he is doing really well now. Guzzling bottles. His mom wants nothing to do with him since he's been home. He keeps trying to latch and she pushes him away. Keeps nipping at him as soon as she smells his butt. The little guy thinks I am his Mama now and cries as soon as I leave his sight.

It's gonna be hard to get rid of this one after all of this (but he is going to be sold, though). I really, really like him now.

Needless to say, he's sleeping in the house again tonight. We have another kidding due in the next several days and I am hoping it goes much smoother. What an experience for the first time. Please tell me this is an anomaly.

Good grief and goat berries, yes, than was an anomaly.

When the next doe kids, smear some birth goo on this kid and see if she takes him, too.

What an awesome idea, thank you! I have barely slept in 2 days due to tending to him and would have never thought of that. Thanks again!
