Possible banding issue
We banded our two boys 5 weeks ago (they were 7 weeks old), and the sacs are still hanging. I noticed a week or so ago that hay was sticking to them so I looked and saw that the area above the band is raw and exposed. I was able to spray one with blu-cote, but haven't done the other. This morning, the one not sprayed has what looks like a cord running from his body to the sac. It still looks alive. Is this normal? It is our first experience, so I'm a bit worried about it. Is there anything I should do about it?
I can try to get a picture if anyone needs it.
P.S. Both boys are acting just fine and don't seem to be at all uncomfortable.

Did you use the little tiny green bands?

Keep spraying (both goats) with the medicated spray. You might want to use some sort of fly spray, too. I'm wondering if there is something drying you could use?

I haven't noticed any flies around, but I will keep an eye on that. Yes, if anyone has ideas about what I could use to make them dry out, let me know. The sacs are very dry and shriveled, but, like I said, they aren't healed at the base. I certainly don't want to cause them any discomfort by messing with them, but I also don't want them to become infected.

I also have iodine spray and Bactine spray. Would either of those be better than the Blu-cote? I was thinking maybe the iodine would be drying?

We had a similar experience with the little green bands on Kinder boys a few years back. I think Alice is on to something because the bands didn't seem tight enough and the kids got an infection that was obviously painful and ugly! IODINE is exactly what cleared it up. We had 7% from the vet.

Do you use something other than the green bands now, dozedotz?

I had an issue similar a year or two back. The sack was healed but the skin above the band was nasty. I cut the dead tissue off, including the band, scrubbed the wound clean, sprayed it and it healed right up. Sometimes all that dead tissue allows the wound to fester and you can't get it clean enough with the dead tissue there.

I agree, cut the dried stuff off and remove the band then spray with iodine.

Just wanted to update that the one that looked the worst yesterday has fallen off. Still a raw-looking spot, so I sprayed it with iodine (much to his dismay). Actually, I was in the process of starting to spray when I discovered that it was gone.

I had the same thing happen 2 years ago because I banded too close to the buckling's body. I sprayed the area every day with Blu-Kote, and it healed nicely. Next time you band, make sure you place the band just above the testicles; it's what I did last year and it worked beautifully. If you get the band next to the body, it causes an abscess.

I always get a raw spot, sometimes with a bit of ooze - it's normal. I have never sprayed anything on them.
