Fly control.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Help!!! Flies are thick!!! It's like a B movie at the barn called "the swarm". Especially after a rain.
What do I use in my barn? What can I put out on the floor, hang in the air, etc? Optimally I would like inexpensive and safe for my chickens and goats.

Or grow tansy. Cut bunches of it and hang them around in the barn.
Flies leave.

If possible, I'll get some from you on Saturday, Pony.
My "I'm not going to garden this year while I'm rehabbing the -ten year uninhabited almost 80 year old house - plan" was reevaluated when the plants at the coop were half price yesterday.

Be careful with those sticky fly strips if you have chickens. I once thought it would be good to hang some on the metal gate to the goat stall because the flies congregated on it. I caught a lot of flies, but also had a rooster get tangled up in it. He thought that the flies caught on it were an easy snack. I had to catch him and rub him in veg oil to get the adhesive off. Then bathe him in Dawn to get the oil off. He was not a happy camper. To this day I regret not getting pictures.
For the cows we use Ivomec pour-on, It kills the flies back to a manageable level. I've never used it as a pour on for goats and I don't know if it has the same effect if given orally. It doesn't bother the chickens. I've wormed them with it to get rid of mites.
I have Muscovey ducks. They'll eat the flies and are a little better at it than the chickens. They are also yummy for humans to eat (the ducks, not the flies).

My animals don't have flies. (The horses have some but not many) it's when I walk and a swarm flies up. It's when I milk she have to pick flies out. It's when I feed and you can't see the feed for the flies landing on it. I want to eradicate the flies. I had strips last year. You could spend a small fortune on strips. They will fill up in a day is the wind blows and they stick to themselves or something else. What about a candle, a spray, (lots of spiders) (my wife hates spiders)

Farmer Jayne, Sorry to break in, but please tell me how you wormed you chickens with pour on, did you pour it on them and if so how much, how did you catch them?
And for flys I use the predators, not sure I got enough and this will be our first year.

I'm trying the little FLybot things this year. Can't say that I've noticed a huge difference but I am willing to try anything. Hate, hate, hate flies. Doug, basically they are little tiny wasp that you sprinkle around and they eat the fly babies before they hatch. It keeps the numbers down. I get a new set of these tiny wasp (very small little things) every 4 weeks through the entire summer. Never really had trouble with flies until we got cattle. Flies LOVE them.

I use permethrin but that's probably on the bad list of the ogranic folks. I'm not real up to speed with that but it sure kills and repels flies.
