If you buy a pregnant doe and the kids are born on your farm, then the offspring carry the previous herd name. Is that true? Do the kids carry the herd name of where they were conceived instead of born?

that's how we've always done it... (makes sense too.. you aren't the breeder.. just the buyer.. so the kids SHOULD carry the actual breeder's herd name)

that's because YOU are the one now selling the kids.. again, it makes the most sense.. (it would get SO CONFUSING done any other way).. could you imagine having to tattoo the other herd's letters? Mine are AAA (how many folks just happen to have that many A's laying around LOL) and who would want to try to do the tat 3 x's?

WHOA! I'm confused now.

I tattooed some purchased week old doelings. I was told to tattoo them with the breeder's tattoo letters.

Alice, you purchased doelings that were born on XYZ's farm so yes they should have XYZ's tattoo.
Doug bought a bred doe from XYZ and 2 months later the kids were born on his farm ,so yes though they were bred by XYZ and will carry the XYZ herd name (as will your doelings) , the kids will carry the tattoo of the farm they were born on

Yea. It threw me. I assumed anything born on my farm that I owned would be my herd name.

Do you have an A.D.G.A. 2014 Guidebook. It pretty well explains all the nuances of registering and tattooing. If you don't you can always go to the A.D.G.A website and download. It is on the front page down on the left.

The only way I know around that is if you have the previous owner fill out a lease form. I have NO clue if this breeder would do that or how big of a deal that would be. I have done that before with a good friend of mine but I don't know how other breeders feel about it .

The whole tattoo thing just throws me for a loop though .

If they are born here, they get my tattoo. If they are born there, they get their tattoo. This has to do with the scrapies herd ID program, which identifies the herd of origin. Registration is a bit different. The person who owned the doe when she was bred chose to make a particular mating, and they should get credit (good or bad) for that decision.

I bought them on XYZ farm, but the doe was bred on ABC's farm. The owner of the dam had me tattoo them with ABC.

Then XYZ does not understand tattoo rules. It's not *that* big of a deal, though, so long as each kid is identified.

Maybe XYZ never had transferred papers on doe from ABC to XYZ ? This thread reminds me of the Abbot and Costellos who's on first bit !!

Not only that, they were bred in one location in Texas, born at another location in Texas, moved to my place in Texas, then transported (with ear tattoos, correct or not), to my farm in Missouri, then to a DIFFERENT farm in Missouri. Poor little kids. :P
