OD on CDT?

I have about 4.5 weeks until kidding and decided to give one of my does 2ml CDT. I am not sure what happened but the first injection did not take. The CDT got in her fur and onto the milk stand. I wasn't sure if any got into her so I decided to draw up 1.5 ml more and inject her. Same thing happened. Not sure if I went through the skin or didn't get the needle in all the way.

Either way, would you try again? My concern is overdosing her in the case that some of the medication entered her system. If you would do it again, would you go for 2ml or another amount?

I'd use 2ml.

Try using a 1/2" needle and tenting the skin, then injecting at an angle more towards the animal's body, instead of parallel. With a good skin tent, you won't be able to poke the underlaying musculature or anything. Sounds like you're going through the skin completely, which has happened to everyone.

Same thing happened to me with Peachy. I redrew. She went into anaphylactic shock and died. Won't be doing that again

Sounds like your going right through the skin to me too. I have also done that before. Just draw up 2ml & re-do the shot.
I started giving mine last year in the back of the leg IM, especially on the babies. They hardly even notice.
I'll try & find the picture I posted here last year showing the area.

I know meat goat people don't want to do this but I'm not eating my goats.

Here's the pictures I posted last year showing where I started giving the shots. So far no problems, did some this year that way too.

Isn't there a chance of hitting the sciatic nerve when giving IM shots in that area? Only asking because I have no clue and love learning new ways to do things

I've given lots of shots IM in the leg muscle, never caused any problems. ALWAYS draw back on the plunger to see if you are in a vein/artery, however, as there are some major ones you often hit when giving shots there.

The CDT vaccine works best administered Sub-q, according to manufacturer and vaccine info that I've found in the past. I used to use it exclusively IM.

I've always given subQ. Since that's what's recommended, I'll just continue giving it the way I have been. Thanks for the info!

I have always given it SQ too until a goat friend showed me the IM in the back of the leg last year. She show's her goats all over & a judge showed her to give the CD & T shot there & she's been doing it that way for years.
The babies seem to handle it better & no lumps.

But if the manufacturer recommends subQ, why listen to a judge and give it IM instead? I would think the manufacturer would know how the drug is intended to be given to make it the most effective.

The breeder I got Hercules and Otto from suggested pulling skin away from the ribcage to do it. That always left a huge, long lasting lump. Then I read about doing 1cc in each armpit and the lumps never showed or were tiny and only lasted a few days.

I have the CD & T manufactured by Colorado Serum & on the bottle under directions it says 2ml SQ or IM. Repeat dose in 3-4 weeks.
