Little bit of a craigslist rant
I am really tired of seeing goats or other meat livestock put up with 'will not sell to meat home'. clauses. I won't buy any livestock with any kind of restriction on the purchase--- its just not reasonable.
I don't mind picking up some cheap goats especially since the buckling I have waiting to go to meat is going to be very lonely otherwise. When i am thinking about companions for him I can take horns and non-registered mixes and they don't have to be incredibly friendly. They only have to be a similar size to him and they will all keep each other company from here and likely into the freezer too. They would have health testing done, they would receive great care and when the time came, be dispatched with respect... which is a lot more than can be said for many pet homes I've seen over the years.
I find it troubling that livestock are being put in the same category as pets by some people. Not every buck is a prospective herd sire. Not even every doe is worth keeping. I even object to there being any category at all to any of my animals, even the dogs and cat have jobs that they are expected to perform.
I am just getting really irritated coming across ad after ad where people want you to take the wildling buck with the crappy conformation and promise to keep him... to have and to hold in sickness and in health as long as we both shall live... instead of letting me purchase a livestock animal and let me give it as good a life as possible which is more than mother nature would promise him.

Hey even if we couldnt do it ourselves, just so you know I would have been fine with placing the goats to meat homes (just needed them gone asap, and weed eating came first)...
in a sense the closure (of ending as Meat) would have been a great relief..

It's amazing to me the number of roosters you see on CL that people are asking a ton of money for, but don't want it to be slaughtered.

We have a society full of people who have never been hungry.

Saw an ad yesterday for a kid's pet rabbit for free, but not for meat. Really, if they are that attached to it, they should keep it.

And how many of these sellers on CL are vegan or vegetarian? I bet none.

I dont know why its a problem, just don't buy that animal. If somebody wants to make a pet out of their goat why should that bother you? How is it any different from making a pet out of a dog or cat?
How'd you like to sell your dog to somebody and find that they killed and ate him?

We're talking about goats, not dogs.

Another one that bothers me is plain Jane egg layer hens that people want $25+ for. If you are selling eggs at $2 or $2.50 a dozen, and adding in any feed costs, how long will it take to just break even on a $25 hen?

Don't buy the hen. I don't understand being "bothered" by what someone else asks for their animals.
Here an inside trick ( shhh), craigslist is like a grab bag of crazy random offers...disregard the offers you don't like and focus on the ones you do.

That's the good part about selling something, you can place any stipulations you want. You also do not have to sell to someone if you do not want to.
Just don't inquire on buying that animal. Goats can be just as much of a pet to someone as a dog or cat to another.
The seller should keep the goat though if they are that concerned for its life. One reason why I would rather use mine to feed my family or dogs, or sell as retail cuts rather than sell a live animal. Happy until the end.
Also it was listed on CL.

If it's not different than making a pet out of a cat or a dog then the reciprocal of that is you should not be upset if you sell your cat or dog and someone decides to use it as meat. I don't have a caste system among my animals. Individuals have immunity to sale or slaughter but not just because they are a certain kind of animal. (no I don't eat dogs or cats and don't really feel comfortable with that emotionally, but intellectually I don't see why there is a difference)
You see roosters and rabbits up too, same thing. They want as much or more for their fluffy than anyone else but they want the lifetime contract.
We only have two animals on our place that have reached 'pet' status. My wonderful dog Zera, an unregistered rat terrier with killer instincts and a maternal streak the size of that 'big Montana sky'. And my first buck, Mr Kidd... he has been through so much with us and he is such an awesome personality, he is my pal. You know that question a while back that caused a lot of buzz? Would you save a human or a dog from drowning? I'd save Mr. Kidd :P
It not like I don't understand loving an animal and placing above your other animals but then I don't _ever_ sell it! Yeah those little goaties with their spiker horns and wagging tails are cute now--- but just wait a couple of months more... that little pet forever goat is going to be sent to a rescue or worse, turned loose in a forest by himself. There are times when kindheartedness leads to cruelty and misery.

And I don't understand people who think they can dictate how someone feels based on how they feel or sees it as necessary to talk down to people on what was specifically opened as a rant thread. Maybe you were trying to be funny--- but it comes off as condescending.

Yeah, people are allowed to vent. If you don't agree with them, don't participate in the thread. Simple as that.
And once you sell an animal, it's no longer yours and you can't dictate the rules. If you don't like that idea, don't sell that animal.

Simple, stay away from Craigslist.
Advertise extra livestock at your local feed store, penny press, community bulletin board, local Amish general store, anywhere but Craigslist and buy using the same methods.
I see everything from steers and bred heifers, guard animals, bulls, horses and pullets advertised in our local free press. I have never seen anybody advertise 'not for meat purposes' along with their product. I have seen bunnies for sale with the clause, 'pet, show or meat animals available'.
With Craigslist, you get what you pay for. I know there are folks who will immediately respond with 'Oh, CL is GREAT! No bad experiences. Buy and sell there all the time. Unless you do not read or listen to the news, people are getting killed responding to Craigslist ads. There are other ways to buy livestock that won't potentially cost you your life.

I got my husband off Craigslist....
But thanks for reminding me about the _many_ alternative to CL, sometimes with my tail-less end glued to my computer chair as I work I forget... there was life before the internet, lol.
ETA: I never go to a CL meeting without letting people know I am going and going armed. Heck, I don't go anywhere these days without such precautions.

Seriously, how will they know if you eat it after you buy it? If you want the goats for meat, just don't tell them they will be for meat. I really doubt they will check up on it after it is gone & even if they did, once the animal is yours, it is yours to do with what you want.

I can't make promises I don't intend to keep... I really can't, I used to be a salesperson, selling myself and my services for as much as I could possibly get and it just makes me feel slimy all over and seems wrong. I don't want to have to lie.

I guess I just don't get venting a rant about something that you have full control over. You don't have to pay any attention to ads that you aren't interested in.
Why should somebody else's offer to sell to a no-kill buyer upset you? It's their animal they can sell to whomever they want or not sell to whomever they want.
Not trying to sound condescending or adversarial I'm just trying to understand the mentality of getting angry at such a thing. The only thing I can think of that would cause you to feel that way is a belief that if I'm selling something that I have to sell to whoever wants it.
