possible to find pedigree based off of ear-tatoo?
We just picked up a saanen doe and her twin kids. her owner passed away and we got her from a relative. The relative was unable to find her pedigree paperwork (but we took her anyways).
Is it possible to find her registration based off of her ear tattoos? I assume everyone has a unique herd name sequence? if so, how do i go about finding it all out?

Yes, you should be able to. Are the tattoos clear?
One ear has the unique letters for the farm, and those are registered with the ADGA.
The other ear has the letter that indicates what year the goat was born (this year is E), and a number that indicates the birth order of that goat in the herd that year. That tattoo is on the registration papers, too.
For example, I have a goat with AAGK in one ear and C5 in the other.
Here's the contact info for the ADGA:

Your goat was born in 2011. Double check the herd tattoo.

ADGA will not tell you the name of the herd name based on the tattoo. You will probably have to "advertise" on a few goat lists to see if someone recognizes the herd name.
Then you will have to see if the herd is still breeding and has kept track of who that goat is (sire and dam). You may not end up with registration papers, but at least you will know lineage.

I don't know if I have any of the membership books from ADGA. Aren't the tattoos listed there? We could search in the state where she bought the goat.

Nope tattoos aren't listed. Herd Names are not tattoos.

Permanent identification... however, it would be nice if it was useful for things like a goat separated from the paperwork. :/ I've always wondered why you can't find an animal based on tattoo, or at least a breeder.

Yep, Permanent ID. When you sell a goat you are supposed to update your currently owned list. If you sold with papers looks like ADGA could tell you who the breeder was. Sometimes if you sell without papers you may not want to be bothered with people wanting papers down the line, just because a doe was tattooed. I still wish there was a data base of tattoos though. Would be nice !!

I talked to Natasha at adga this morning and she wasn't able to give me the herd name because of their policy. However she spoke to the owner of the farm who was on a road trip and will be back Wednesday. She lives about 45 minutes away from me and told Natasha that she would dig out the doe's paperwork. "Daisy" is not registered with adga, but worse comes to worse I could have the original breeder NOA her. So yes they tracked her back to her source

Her herd name tattoo was enough for Natasha at adga to help me along the way. Apparently "daisy," who I intend to rename even if it's just what we call her, is from house of Hayes goat dairy/cheese (they contribute to Cabot)

If the original breeder kept good records and knows sire/dam (and they are registered), then if they wish they can provide you with all the paperwork necessary to register her fully. Some breeders may charge an extra fee because the animal was originally sold for less without papers.

Is ADGA willing to contact the breeder on your behalf, though? And then give them your contact info? The breeder may not do anything or want to be helpful, but I bet some would be.
I really think they should have something in the directory for tat's, and folks could opt out if they wanted to. Would sure help a lot, like if a goat wondered off and someone found them, or heaven forbid was stolen!

Well Goat registries are obviously more helpful than Dog registries.
A couple years ago I found two wandering English Springer Spaniels. A male and female. The female had obviously been nursing. I got a hold of AKC to see if there had perhaps been a litter of puppies registered recently in the surrounding area so I could reunite them. I was told to drop them off at the animal shelter because they wouldn't help.
