Keeping single kid warm
It's about time to start milking my doe. Her kid is the first one so she doesn't have others to huddle down with at night. The temperature will be around 16 degrees the first time she would be separated. Will she be warm enough without her mother to lay with?
Also, she will be separated at night but what is the maximum hours that should be?

If it were me, I would not separately pen the kid until the temps have greatly improved OR there are more kids to snuggle with.
Unless. . . . . . you could always crate the kid in the house!

Can you try taping teats instead of separating if you want to start milking?

I had actually thought of bringing her in the house but I also thought of a baby goat crying pitifully all night long lol. I didn't know taping was an option. What sort of tape do you use for this?

I've never used it myself and I believe there are also harnesses you can get. Perhaps someone with more experience will respond. And, you know, they don't cry if you let them sleep in the bed with you.

I should also ask how warm should it be before she can be by herself? The other does should not be due until the end of the month.

We brought our latest newbies, born yesterday morn, in the house. Its a mess, but they are worth it. According the world's most accurate weather forecaster, they are going back to the kiddy corral tomorrow.

I would not separate a single kid alone all night even if it were warmer temp's. Goats need another goat for a buddy even a baby & just for over night.
There are goat bra's That cover the udder & work great to keep the baby from nursing. You could put on the doe in the evening, milk in the a.m. then take the udder support off.
I think Hoegger sell's one & maybe caprine supply also. Do a google search for uddert support.

Cades - lol well, I said I'd never bring chickens in the house and don't you know the power went out, heat lamp went off and there they were in the living room.
Backfourty - Thanks, I'll look those up. Goat bras. Learn something new every day

incubator
Make an incubator out of a 55 gallon drum.Stand it up,cut a hole in the side just big enough to let the baby in.Drill a hole in the top and put a cord with a light bulb in it.A 75 watt bulb will keep your babies toasty warm.I'll send pics of mine if you're interested.
The kids will run out and grab a bite to eat and go right back in.

Alan - I'd love to use your incubator idea but my barn isn't yet hooked up to electricity
So I tried the tape. It stayed on one side but not the side that the kid favours. I thought I had the nursing out of one side issue resolved but apparently not and the un-nursed side is seeming rather congested. I wonder if only taping the side that the kid likes will encourage her to get the other side flowing. I'm also using compresses.
Udder supports/bras are a bit pricey it turns out! I want to get one but in the meantime, if the taping totally fails, I might be bringing a baby goat in the house after all.

Didn't someone use a knit hat to exclude kids and/or self suckers? I remember seeing pics as it was rather funny.
You could cut one hole for the teat you want used, might have to fashion longer ties to go over the back.
