I do much like Coso does.. I can stick thru hair, but would rather have a small shaved spot.. I'm right handed so I put my left thumb on the groove.. the vein will pop up.. feels rubbery if you thumb it with your right finger tips.. I pull off the needle cover with my teeth and hold it in my teeth as I draw.. for me the key to one stab drawing is to get the edge of the syringe down low and flat on my left thumb (the one holding off the vein).. that way I'm can do a gentle upwards poke (with my right thumb on the syringe..pointing right at the vein).. as soon as the needle goes in. I take my index finger on my left hand (keeping my left thumb on the vein).. my index finger holds the syringe/needle in place .. as I flip my right hand over and use my thumb and index finger to draw back the plunge.. Once I started using that left index finger to pin down the syringe and not let it pull out or fall out while trying to actually pull the blood.. my 1 time stick rate skyrocketed.. (last group of does we did were a group of 18 or 19.. only one got stabbed twice.. she is always hard.. has a deep vein that rolls).. Jess and I drew blood last week on the 11month old does.. they were onery..moving targets.. (No collars on).. would never have gotten ANY out of them if I hadn't used that left index finger to hold the syringe in place/so the needle stayed in the vein).. Justine.. just keep trying. You'll get it (it's a very empowering feeling once you can do it yourself and know you never need another goat person or vet to be available. you wake up at 3am and decide you want to send off blood.. you can just get up and go do it..LOL (3am blood draws are only something I would think of during the height of kidding madness LOL)
if you have someone helping you.. make sure they aren't pulling that head up and curving the neck too much. makes it much harder.. I like the held held level... jaw turned just barely toward holder..
