I am so upset

I had a beautiful really tame sweet black registered alpine billy Well used to being the key word... last night the coyotes got into their pen and killed him. at least i think it was coyotes. My mastiff was going crazy inside the house and i let him out infront of me before i could grab the 410 and run out behind him. there was blood all over his legs and his neck... im so upset not only was he the best goat i ever had now im out the $150 I paid for him and have to buy another one and i didnt even get to breed him to my female cause she was too young. so, i put my only other goat in with my sheep up by the house. will she be okay with them?

darn coyotes now ill invest in a great pyrenes or train one of my mastiffs to be out with them at all time once the weather breaks.

oh I am so sorry that happened to you. I would think she will be fine though I will admit I don't know sheep and how they treat strangers in their flock. But being closer to the house is better.

So sorry . I woudn't trust an non lgd breed with goats. Your mastiffs are probably awesome. I love mastiffs but the job is the one that lgd's are bred for and they are really great at it. A male will be a good match for one or two coyotes. You can leave the mastiff (s) outside the goat area to patrol but inside the goat area - just my 2 cents- i would only trust an lgd.

My male neopolitan mastiff hank is used to being in the sheep/ goat pens. He goes in and out with me when i feed, milk or clean out their house. I am looking for a german shepherd because thats what my son wants to get and they are good breeds but also considering a great pyr. They goat seems to be getting along great with the sheep. Our pot belly pig even hangs out with them.lol we are now going to start looking for another nice billy. It just stinks cause he was so tame etc. and a handsome fella.

I am so sorry for your loss. My biggest fear was always coyotes & I would never let the goats have the whole pasture at night. Always had a fence with a gate to keep them closer to the barn at night until we got LGD's & so happy we did. I no longer worry.

Be very careful with the German shepherd. My father-in-law has one, and he killed a couple of lambs before we got him an invisible fence. He plays with them to death. One day, a goat got out, and he dragged her down to the creek and tried to drown her...I think that's how the others were killed too. She was totally unharmed, just a little startled...very odd.

We had a serious problem with a German Shepherd we adopted. Was very tame, but could NOT get him to stop chasing the goats. Eventually "played" too rough with two of my doelings (bit their back legs) that wandered out of the cattle panel fence and I had to put them down. He was obedience trained (well, of course up to the goat chasing) but could NOT get the prey-drive out of him. We eventually adopted him out to a non-farming, single woman and both are happy. Just my 2 cents worth.

We let our English Mastiff in with our goats when we are doing barn chores and he has absolutely NO urge to chase or play with them. I'd leave him outside with the goats....but he whines to be let in the house with us!

Sorry about your goat Hope the coyotes stay away.

I am so sorry for your loss. I would definitely get an LGD to be with the goats. I would not put one of the mastiffs in with them. My mastiffs are great around the goats, but they are with me doing chores. They are not trustworthy around baby goats that are bouncing and jumping and running. They get just way too excited and even though the dogs have been going in the goat barn and pasture with me all their lives, they do start to try and play. One good "play" session could lead to dead baby goats. They just don't have the temperament to be in with the goats on their own all the time. Plus, they really are not happy away from us. Just my 2 cents. Blessings, Kat

I am so upset

Coyotes are everywhere. I have seen them in my yard. The Danes keep them scared away and the Pyrenees pups are getting big and they are sleeping with the goats. So I should be protected soon.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I lock my goats up in the barn at night. We have a lot of coyotes.
