If you SUSPECT pneumonia, give the meds
I lost Bella's doeling last night. Three days old. She's the one who was SO cold, and I brought her back from the brink on the day she was born.
Yesterday, when I fed goats at 4:00, she was panting a little. I took her temperature, and it was on the high side of normal, but the outside temperature was 70 degrees, and the other kids were panting, too.
I should have gone with my gut and given her the antibiotic anyway. I talked myself out of it because I didn't want to assault her system if she wasn't sick.
She was dead when I went out to milk this morning.
Listen to your gut instincts.

That is tough, Alice. So sorry. When you say that you did "not want to assault her system"
I agree 100% and would have worried myself to death but would have done exactly what you did...hindsight. Thanks for the warning, but I think you did the right thing...sometimes we miss.

So sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose the little ones. Sometimes you just can't tell which is best. The meds would have been hard on her, being so young and already having had a close call. Thank you for sharing.

Ok. I suspect Pneumonia. 4 days old. Still weak. Had mucous on bottom lip. His brother and sister are doing great. He's been weak since the start. Won't suck. Been tube feeding. Have given BoSe twice and replamin twice. What's the next step.

Doug, I have not had to deal with pneumonia yet...but I know that you want Nuflor if that is what the kid has. On the other hand, have you gotten the kid's temperature? Sub normal temp means that you are probably dealing with weak kid syndrome rather than pneumonia....would hate to see you waste the meds or have to go and buy them if that is not the problem...

Temp is 102. But all three kids in the pen are 102. They are in front of the heater. He's up and playing a little after the feeding. I have nuflor. I don't know the dosage.

Also. The mucous looking stuff looked like drool and was clear. The nose is dry. At this time, I'm not medicating but would like to write down the dosage.

1 CC Nuflor per 30 pounds of goat.
The doeling I had that died had a temp of 102 also. Only other symptom was panting.

So 1/4cc for an 8 pound goat. Seems I read somewhere to give a minimum of 1/2cc to any size goat.

OK...this is probably off base, but Emily says: check for 2 teats! is it a boy or a girl and looks normal? and we have added feel roof of mouth for cleft palate...not that we have had one (nor have we had a problem with teats or plumbing) BUT we read some place that kids with a cleft palate can't suck...or can't suck for very long because it the split in the roof of the mouth gets larger as they grow...probably not that, but again, if that is the problem, you will be wasting your time with meds.
