More New Babies!
It was COLD today, so of course, this would be the morning to find new babies in the barn. We had a three-hour delay at school today, so I had a little extra time before leaving for work. I told DH not to worry with the chores before he left for work; I'd give him the morning off and do them. So, he left, and I suited up in the winter barn wear. I filled up buckets with warm water for the herd. I knew their water would be frozen. I got to the barn and checked the "nursery stall" to see that Zora and her twins were well. Gave her a good helping of hay and warm water and set to caring for everyone else. I turned to fill the hay feeder, and they all wandered over for a good breakfast nibble. As they lined up with rears facing me, I noticed that Willa's was a mess. About that time, I heard a high-pitched, pitiful cry from the corner, and, sure enough, there was a brand new, very wet, little doeling. I led Willa back over to her progeny and got her settled there while I moved everyone else out to the front part of the barn. I ran back to the house for towels, more warm water with molasses, and all the necessary supplies and supplements. When I got back out there, there was a single hoof showing. Another one. Ok. I put on my best cheerleader voice and encouraged her to push that booger out. Nope. Several hard contractions produced no progress at all. Still one little hoof. I wasn't going to wait any longer. Off came the warm gloves, and in I went. I found the other hoof and moved it forward, but still no nose. I got my hand back in there and felt until I knew I'd found a head. It was turned back over the shoulder. I was able to push him back a bit and turn the head the right way. As soon as the nose was in the right place, out it appeared with hooves directly under it. I gave a tug; Willa gave a push. Out came a little black buck. Well, not little, exactly. Skinny, but loooong. I had called DH in a panic when I went back to the house, so he made an emergency exit from work. When he got home, I was trying to get everyone dried and warm. We ended up bringing them inside to sit in a box in front of the heater while we tended to Willa and DH got their "cottage" ready for move-in. By that time, I had to leave for work. My wonderful hubby finished up with getting everyone situated. He watched to make sure that both had nursed and were well settled in. All of this started when it was 10 degrees out there! Geez!
Anyway, here's the only picture so far. We'll get more soon. The brown one is the doeling, and the black one is the buckling.
