Babette's contractions
Babette is in labor, contractions ten minutes apart. She's chosen the nicest, sunniest, warmest day to do this. Good girl.
So, ten minutes apart. How long now?

Right after you see nose and toes.
If she goes longer than 45 minutes, "go in" to see if kids are tangled.

How exciting! She is obviously an experienced mom and knows what is good for the kids! OK...let's get serious: quads and not a single less...quints would be ok. Come on Babette! We are counting on you!

I just went in and checked Babette. She hasn't dilated much yet. I didn't stick my hand in her uterus because of that. I'm thinking I'm misjudging her and she is still in early labor. Thoughts?

You won't see dilation from the outside. Did you feel for her cervix (which is what dilates)?
If kids are stuck, you never see nose and toes.

If she's having real contractions, you need to be checking inside.

If I had a pregnant goat that big, I'd be afraid to face a delivery alone. She's the biggest I've seen so far, don't know how she even stood on her feet.
We don't have goats, but I agree, go in to check dilation of cervix, etc.

She still hasn't delivered. I don't think she is in real labor. I found out my husband, who was home today, gave her a whole scoop of concentrates this morning instead of her usual hay and handful of alfalfa pellets. She is having labored breathing. I gave her a bunch of baking soda and she started belching like a pro. I'll be with her tonight, massaging her rumen and having the vet out first thing in the morning.

I called the vet out. Babette was just too uncomfortable. The vet just left. Babette is not in labor. But she has a nasty acidotic rumen. We gave her some banamine, thiamine, penicillin, and probiotics. I'm keeping a close eye on her tonight, picking up more penicillin in the morning. With all this she may still go into labor but the vet was of the opinion that she still has a few weeks to go.

Wow- with that picture you posted, I would have thought she must be ready to pop too. Hopefully she will feel better in the morning.

Yeah, we had a talk. We'll have a little lengthier talk tomorrow about that.
I tried to steal a plug from Prima Donna. All I got was some loud complaints and some green juice. I gave that to Babette. I'll try again tomorrow. If anyone has any pointers on how to do that easier let me know.

Yep, steal a plug of cud from one of the other goats to give Babette's rumen a jump start.

GraceAlice cud is their food they burb up to "Rechew" I guess you could say. It is full of good things for goats tummies . A lot of people if they have a goat that is off or has an upset rumen will try and steal cud from a healthy goat to give to the sick one. In some cases it can actually help jump start the digestive system if it shuts down I believe.
Skeeterblue I am glad you caught it in time! Praying for a healthy (and feeling better) doe and happy babies in the next few weeks.

I watch the healthy goats until I see a cud ball coming up their throats, then smoosh it into their cheek and (with gloves and my hands still end up a little smelly!) I run my finger alongside their cheek so as to not get bit by the pointy molars, and swipe out some cud. It is the best probiotic you could give a goat...way better than any probios, yogurt, etc. The juices are actually the best thing according to some articles on cows I have read...I don't know how you got the juices out, did you tube the donor goat?
