Question lutalyse (pronunciation)

Can someone tell me the pronunciation of
lutalyse? Lute-uh-lease ?
(I hate sounding dumb calling the vet).

Will a vet give you some to have on hand or do you need
to take a specific goat in? Or does it depend on the
vet? What would we be looking for price wise
for a dosage (morbid curiosity)?
I'm considering dosing our other young doe after
what happened last week... and from what
I've read, not a bad thing to have on hand!

Thanks

You pronunciation is correct.
As far as getting the drug, it'll depend upon the vet. If you have an established relationship with the vet and they know you, you may be able to pick up the product. If it's a new vet to you, you will most likely have to make an appointment or have a farm call.
Can't help you with the price.

Just call it Lute. They'll know.

I think my vet office mispronounces it.

Here's the official pronunciation:

Ours acted like he didn't know what it was. But after I gave the full pronunciation and why I was asking for it, he dispensed it. He called it lute a few times in the ensuing conversation, so I know he was just vetting the requestor.

we too just call it lute.. I get a bottle at a time (30 ml vial).. for $18.00 a bottle).. I'll be going into town to buy 2 more bottles of Lute and 2 bottles of dex (Dexamethasone) to get us ready for kidding season.. Not only do we use it to induce labor.. but I also rub it/massage it in on a cervix that isn't opening like it should... good stuff to have on hand..

the lute... it will work to soften and open up a stubborn cerivx.. (I use the dex in conjunction with the lute when I induce.. also keep it on hand for congested udders.. possible brain swelling.. to help mature lungs in kids.. all sorts of uses)

note: if you are female.. use a glove when handling the lute.. (I do all my kidding's barehanded.. yes, even up to my elbow..just clean hands and short, well filed fingernails.. BUT.. if I need to lute a cerivx.. I wear gloves.. just pull some out in a syringe.. spray it onto my gloved and LUBED.. fingers..

with the Lute. it depends on what you are attempting to do with it... to get labor STARTED (it induces basically an abortion.. so you HAVE to be DEAD SURE of your due dates, before giving it).. it is given as as DEEP IM shot (we use 2cc's of Lute for inductions).. BUT. it takes 30 to 36 hours to dilate the cervix.. During a kidding that's going wrong. with a cerivx not opening all the way.. you will already have a somewhat soften and opening one to begin with.. so rubbing the Lute into that already ready cervix will help to ripen/open things up...

so it's different applications depending on the need.

Thank you Yarrow. I never know lute could be use in that manner. Very nice to know. Once spend an hour massaging a cervix the rest of the way open to deliver a 16 lb lamb his half pint twin fell out. Just wondering I know lute can mess with a woman reproductive organs, but what if you don't have any? I would still wear gloves just a thought.

I used it when my neighbor's BIG goat jumped the fence and bred my little doe.
I had to call around to a couple different vets to find one that would give it to me without bringing the doe in for an exam.
I worked. I just gave her a shot and then another one a week later. She went back into heat 3 weeks later and was bred to a buck her same size/breed.

Lute-a-lice

The name implies what it actually does. It works on the Corpus Luteum to get rid of it/cause lysis.

Lots of people just call it lute. Or you could ask for prostaglandin.

It depends on the vet whether they will sell it without seeing your goat. You may be able to buy a whole bottle.

It is generally a cheap medication.

Yarrow. I have used it in that way for a ringwomb doe, but I was thinking as I entered the doe, that probably most of it got rubbed off on the vagina on the way in to the cervix. However, I think being on the mucous membrane surface of the vagina helped to cause quicker absorption anyway. How much do you normally use for that purpose? Have you had to do this very much? I know in humans, they have some kind of insert/suppository pill they will put up next to the cervix to ripen it for inducing humans...I bet same would work in goats, if anybody could get ahold of some of those!

I've used it quite a few times over the last 10 years. It is runny..so I put a blob of lube about midway up on my middle fingers---Palm up--- then shoot a cc or two into the lube... Then I pull my fingers inward... Making that cupped flower shape that goes In the easiest. ( by the time I break out the lute. Doe will already be well lubed from my earlier efforts) so my hand goes right in... I use my thumb to push the lute lube mix onto the cervix...I agree just getting it onto the membranes would help.... But I do get most onto the cervix with the method I use

Interesting idea, thanks! Hope I don't need it this year and if I do, hope one of my "on call" goat people is around as I really don't want to mess with lute at all if I can help it (I'm pregnant).

No way you should handle the lute at all with you being pregnant. I didn't even let my daughter pull it up into syringes for me during inductions, when she was pregnant Not worth the risk of premature labor ( rubber gloves or not)

Correct pronunciation is Loot-ah-lize (like eyes) with the accent on the first syllable.
