blood draw

Ok, so we have decided to draw the girls ( Nubian does) blood ourselves. We are ordering the tubes today. Plan is to use biotrack. Do they tell u how much blood for each test you need? We are testing for pregnancy as well as CAE, should we do anything else? Herd we got them from has never had any tested but also never brings anything new in or goes anywhere, so we are hoping. We want to have a great herd so want to do it right. Thanks.

I put 3 cc of blood. They can manage with 2 cc if you have a problem animal, but three is better.

Through Biotracking, CAE and pregnancy are the tests you run.

If you want other tests, use WADDL.

WADDL info:

Here's the form to use:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts_wadd...sWADDL-014.pdf

Fee schedule:
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts_waddl/fees.aspx

There is a base fee of $10, called the accension fee. Here's the costs of the tests I would do, assuming you live out of state.
Caseous Lymphadenitis $9.45
Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis $6.30
Johnes $6.30

I am sure it based on opinions but are the CL and Johnes a good idea? What are they?

Caseous Lymphadenitis. Baaad disease. Causes cysts/abscesses throughout the body. Is contagious to humans.

Johnes is an incurable wasting disease. Some connection between it and Crohns disease.

I will use biotracking for pregnancy tests, but prefer http://pavlab.com/pavlab/diagnostic-...ces-for-goats/ for disease testing. While I was figuring out the direction of my herd, I tested annually. Now that I've stuck with the same girls for awhile, I will probably go every other year. I do CAE, CL, and Johnes. I have done the Q-fever, Brucellosis and others once before, but only because we were moving and I wanted to check for everything I could before transport. Pav Lab's prices are excellent, which keeps me going back. I think it's just roughly 1.5 CC blood for each test you need. I always draw extra just in case, though. If you need any tips on the draw, I'd be happy to show you.
