Hoses - The Achille's Heel of Winter Livestock Choring!

This evening I discovered that a 50-foot coiled hose fits neatly into a 5-gallon bucket. This is great for transporting the hose as you go about feeding & watering chores, then store the hose IN the bucket IN the house to avoid freeze-ups. (And you don't have to struggle, trying to drain the water out of it!)

Nehi you are always coming up with the most ingenius ideas! Now I can hardly wait for my hose to thaw out so I can try this.

Better yet...a heated hose that you don't have to bring in. I love mine!

That's a tight coil! My hoses are stiffer than that. It is much easier here, to just drain them, because we have all these handy hills around here.

Nehi, how do those hoses hold up over time? I was aggravated at mine today and will be replacing them as soon as I can afford to.

CJB, this is a new purchase, so I don't have any practical data on the lifespan of the coiled hoses. Granted, they are NOT as durable as a contractor-grade hose, but for just winter use, they seem practical for the intended purpose.

Thank You, GS. I have one bad leg (and one good leg!), so, just getting myself from Point A to Point B is an ordeal (and a victory when accomplished!) Add in an awkward burden to carry, and the rigor of the ambulation ordeal is doubled.

There I was, standing in the kitchen, preparing to head out to the barn & use this hose for the very first time. Said unruly hose grasped awkwardly in my Right hand, snaking & coiling itself every-which-way and every-which-where. I just *knew* it intended to trip me up! I saw the empty bucket off to the side, and the proverbial lightbulb lit up! Aha! The means to corral the monster AND transport it at the same time! One of those lucky moments.

Good thing...as that hose would be impossible to drain!

Let us know how it holds up.....great idea, necessity is the mother of all invention!

Well I drained my hoses a week ago. Then I used them once. I drained again. They've been froze ever since and I've been hauling water from the spigot to all the animals daily.

using an air compressor helps to blow out water if your hose can't come inside. keep up the good work on finding neat ideas.

every so often I will hurt my back and I go from functional to almost non mobile. I have a hard time finding ideas to make life easier during that time.
