Corabelle is scouring

My Saanen doe is scouring really bad this morning. I took a sample of paddock pudding in to the vet this morning and I'm just got the results -- just strongyloides, heavy bloom. So now I'm waiting for the vet to get back to me with a wormer suggestion, and I will treat everyone.

Corabelle was bred 2 weeks ago. Is it too early to have a pregnancy cause a bloom? Can I consider this a positive sign of pregnancy? Or is this most likely just a coincidence? Sidenote: there has been no other change in her diet or care... just the breeding.

I'm thinking (also known as a wild @$$ guess) that it's just coincidence.

Deworming at this stage of pregnancy is not normally recommended, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

That's what I'm thinking, Alice. I'm hoping the vet can recommend something safe for her that will knock this down a bit.

Weird. Prohibit, which I consider a touchy wormer because it is toxic if given too much, is considered safe for pregnant does... go figure.

Found this! It is a chart showing wormers, their efficacy and what is safe in pregnant does. Oh, this is seriously going in my goat care book.

Above is the wormer dosages I follow & at the top is a section about worming pregnant does'. I just try never to worm them after breeding but sometimes you just can't help it.

I would not deworm everyone. Check eyelids, evaulate body condition/stool consistency and run fecals if you can or want, and treat accordingly.

I try to deworm my girls right before breeding to hopefully keep them from needing it at the beginning stages of pregnancy, but if your doe needs deworming, she needs it. Most of the dewormers that are totally safe in pregnancy are not terribly effective, but maybe they can help carry her to later in pregnancy. Or you could give whatever is necessary to totally knock out the problem and abort her in case it causes malformations in the kids and re-breed. That does seem a little extreme though. I think Haemonchus (barberpole) worms are a type of strongyle.

Sorry, never mind, you said strongyloides...that's not the same as strongyles. Sorry for the confusion! I think stongyloides is just pinworms. Confirm this with your vet, but if it is, then I wouldn't really do anything about it at the moment, as it doesn't cause much problems for the goats usually. Monitor her body condition and eyelid color. Maybe try another fecal to be sure that's the only worm she's dealing with. Consider getting some good probiotics (ones specific for ruminants) and some baking soda to her. She may be having some kind of rumen upset caused by diet/environmental factors.

I got the report from the vet. He specifically ruled out barberpole. It is tough in this area and he's seeing lots of very sick goats with barberpole. But we dry lot, so there is no exposure. She definitely is having a horrible bloom of strongyloides, like 600 per field!

I have to treat. She is having constant running scours, 48+ hours and getting worse.

He recommended Cydectin. Although it isn't approved in pregnancy, he says he's used it in a lot of pregnant does with no problems. I don't care. I'm not using it. I'm not risking my doe.

I have prohibit and that is effective against this worm in one single dose. It keeps after hydration for 90 days and I can treat the others if/as they scour. The only thing is I will have to be exact with the dosage. So she gets weighed tomorrow and treated... 2 ml per 50 lbs.

Poor girl is just miserable.

The dewormers that aren't suppose to be used in pregnancy are generally not going to harm the doe, but the kids she is carrying. Hoping she gets feeling better soon! In addition to the dewormer, I would give her at least a shot of b-complex.

I have Thiamine. Do you think I should give her that? If so how much? IM or SQ?

I have used Cydectin (quest gel) early in pregnancy on a doe with no problems. Most of what I have read says try to wait till after 45 days for reg Ivermectin and Cydectin, but I have used both on a few occasions before that with no problems.

It shouldn't hurt, might help. I was just thinking since she is scouring that her rumen may not be functioning well so she might not be getting enough b-vits. Anytime goats are sick for any reason, I try to remember to give them b-vits. You can't really overdose it, since they are water soluble vitamins.

Mygoat, what parts of pregnancy have you used them? Have you used them in early pregnancy?

I gave her 6 ml of Prohibit concentrate orally with 6 ml of Walmart Hawaiian Punch flavored syrup. She took it well, checked her several hours later and later still and she is doing fine.

About the thiamine - she is just at 150 lbs. What dosage should I give her and should it be given IM or sub-q?
