Question about registration

Our Leroy is registered but I haven't sent in the papers yet for the change of ownership. His registration papers are through the American Goat Association (I think; I am too lazy to go upstairs and look). I do know it is not ADGA.

I have seen ads for goats or stud service that say the goat is double registered or triple registered. How does a person register their goat through more than one organization?

Since we have the beginnings of our dairy goat herd in Leroy, I would like to have ADGA registered goats. I tried to read up on the registrations and methods, but I was totally confused after reading a while.

Can someone explain to me, in simple terms, the goat registration process and how we can someday have ADGA goats?

Registration process with ADGA is not hideously difficult. First of all, get Leroy registered in YOUR name with his current registry. Once you have that certificate in hand, send a PHOTOCOPY along with the registration application and fee to ADGA. If ypu run into snags, they will talk you through the process by phone.

Good Luck!

I think you really need to get him transferred into your name before using him on any of your does' too or maybe it's just my understanding(& could be wrong) that he needs to be in your name before breeding or you will need a breeding memo from the breeder you bought him from to register your kids.
At least with MDGA I think that's how it works.

To switch a ND from AGS to ADGA you need to get him in your name and request a "transfer record request" on him. Form is here http://www.americangoatsociety.com/r..._brochures.php I think it is $5 or something. Fill out a ADGA app for him and this form, send in to ADGA with fee ($13?).

Thank you for the replies. You all made it so much easier to understand than what I was trying to absorb by reading the website.

I did mail in his paper with the transfer of ownership yesterday, which is why I was pondering registrations yesterday morning.

On the ADGA site, I read something about using your farm name and paying a yearly fee for the use of the name (or something to that effect). I didn't understand that part at all. With dog registrations, you have so many spaces allowed for a name, and if you wanted your name to be a part of the registered name, you simply incorporated it into the allowed number of spaces. For example, Riston's Apache Warrior. Is it not the same with goats? The doeling we will get next year will already be registered with the farm name that she is from, but if we have kids the next year I would like them to carry our name. That's a long time off, LOL, but I was just curious about the use of the farm name.

Again, many thanks!

Yes, you do have to register your farm name with ADGA, and there is a fee, if approved. You're right about the herd name accounting for "X" number of spaces when naming/registering the progeny.
