Bad foot problem

Hi,

One of our milking does is really limping. At first I thought it was thrush on her front hoof so I trimmed it up (there was some white powderish stuff in there) and then had my daughter soak her foot 2x a day in epsom salts. It worked well but now she has reverted back and walks very tenderly and doesn't want to get up if she doesn't have to. What is going on? What should I do? Thank you!

Michelle

Do you supplement with copper? Most of us give the goats copper boluses on a regular basis, and that helps hoof health.

Rather than epsom salt, I'd use Koppertox liquid. It's in the horse care section of the farm store.

Is Koppertox and Copper Bolus safe for a dairy doe? Sorry if it is a dumb question.

I like Thrushbuster, it's also in the horse aisle. Make sure you get Mustad brand and not any of the many knockoffs. It works like a charm.

Yes, they are safe and recommended.

I get the 12.5 gm boluses and give a full size doe half.

Here's a video about dividing the bigger boluses into gel caps.

Valley Vet also sells small ones, but they are ridiculously expensive.

It should work great for you. I just did a 4 week recheck on a client's buck I treated with it, he was very lame and was rotted to bleeding and very sore.

He looks wonderful now.

Thank you! I just did her feet. They were pretty sore and yucky. Hoping she will clear up quick!
