vet emergency this evening

things didn't go as smooth as usual at evening chores.. first there were several does in heat (that always makes all the does a bit spazzy).. anyway I'm on the phone (had a friend who passed away back in Oklahoma.. going there to spread her ashes next week)... was talking to her husband when Jess burst in.. with THAT look on her face!!! I instantly hung up and took off to see what was wrong... seems as they were bringing the feed in to the doe pen.. one of the LGDs walked out from behind the edge of one of the little barns...it startled a doe that just saw the dog out of the corner of her eye.. her startle ...passed on to the others on that end.. the ones on the other end were pushing for position to get fed.. in all the pushing/shoving.. Chloe (the yearling doe I bought from a friend who is on this board!..) WELL, somehow she became airborne.. don't know if she jumped on her own or if she got squeezed in the startled end and then jumped.. but she ended up severely cut..front right leg..just below the knee..

Jess & Chris already had her here at the house when Jess came to get me.. I felt and didn't feel a break, but knew we needed to take care of the cut.. it was big and laid open to the bone.. (at least she wasn't bleeding too badly).. got all my stuff.. got hubby out to help hold, gave her some banamine.. started to clean it out before stitching it.. discovered her tendons were severed.. you could watch them pull up and disappear into her knee area, if you bent her knee.. no way was I going to try to fix THAT in fading light... gave the new vet a call.. headed that way..it took a bit of doing, but she finally got the tendons stitched back together and the wound closed.. she is in a splint (hoof to just below the shoulder..for 6 to 8 wks).. I will take her back (if all goes well) next wed.. then we'll just play it by ear...

She was a brave girl.. she was in a lot of pain.. after seeing how bad the wound was.. no way was I loading her into the goat tote to ride alone in the dark and cold.. to the vet's... SO.. I had to come up with something else.. ended up putting down the back seats in my hyundai..(the one I don't even let the dogs ride in!!).. blanket covering it.. hubby carried her to the car and got her in for me.. went to the vet with me.. then bless his heart.. he was the one on the ground holding her down while Dr. Ann worked on her wound.. (it took 3 of us at times to keep her still enough not to tear apart the tendon repair while sewing the wound shut).. she and her dam have been moved to my kidding barn.. they are in a pen together (I can watch her on camera this way)..she has to be kept quiet and not to much moving around.. she has to be kept dry.. so no walking in the dew ect..) I think living in the kidding stall (it's 8x8) eating hay all day is the safest place for her to heal.. she is wearing hot pink and looking very stylish ..she is doing well.. eating hay (won't feed her any grain at all for 24 hours).. did give a lot of baking soda.. don't want the stress and drugs to cause gut issues on top of the wound issue.. she has figured out how to lay down and get up with the splint on.. she isn't trying to take it off.. so I have hopes of the repair getting the chance to heal and hold.

have no clue what the cost will be.. didn't ask.. (they said just settle up when we are all done with return visits ect).. I'm just so happy after all these years to have a vet to go to when we really, really need one.

(I took a couple pics with hubby's phone as they worked on her)

Susie -thank you so much for sending me the FB message-glad I saw that first this morn instead of this. Poor Chloe, but she is so lucky to have the family she has now and what a good time for hubby to be home -it looks like he is doing an awesome job assisting! Hope she heals well for you and behaves (so hard to keep a goat contained with an injury) and I'm sorry you had to deal with a crisis. Love and hugs from Chloe's original Mom.

Sending healing vibes to Chloe! What an ordeal! Jeepers Yarrow, I'm so glad you were able to help her. Tendons are tricky that is for sure. It's good they didn't "snap" back farther up/down into the leg so the doc could grab them to sew together. (((hugs))))

Ouch!!! Your poor goats need to stop hurting themselves . Which buck was it that tore up his ear? And boy you are calmer under pressure than me! I would have freaked out walking out to seeing something like that and THANK GOD for awesome vets!

I will be praying poor Chloe heals up fast! I tell you those yearlings can do some of the dumbest things. I don't know how many times mine have done something that made my heart stop, generally my Nubian crosses where the worst though .

Poor Chloe- I hope she heals fast. Being so young gives her a good shot at a full recovery.
I also hope for you that the bill is not too much. Sometimes a severe injury is actually less expensive as its repair is a one time shot.

thanks for all the well wishes everyone... (as soon as I posted on here last night.. my modem went down.. no internet until right now).. Chole is doing well and getting around a lot better then I thought she would.. Keep checking to make sure her foot is nice and warm *but not hot/feverish*.. I woke up and turned on the cameras 4x last night.. each time she was either laying there chewing cud (a sign ALWAYS like to see after stess/trauma).. or she was up eating hay.. she spent most of today with her head buried in the hay feeder.. her dam just looks rather poor with the whole situation LOL..

again, thank you all for the healing thoughts.. I will pass them on to Chloe..

Wow! I hope that heals up good for her! Did your vet use a local block on that leg? Poor goatie girl! Can't imagine how much that has got to hurt!

OK..so let me get this straight, if I suffer a deep cut and torn tendon and come to your place, I get my own room, with my own "couch" and ALL that food? Hmmmm? Not a bad deal....Hate to say it, Susie, but that amount of hay looks like the "Joan Coolidge answer to what ails you!!" and I thought Indee was fat (!) Can't wait to see what this little one looks like after you finish "gettin' her on her feet" again...if she can stand!! lol
Good news she is doing so well!! Hope you and hubs have recuperated, too! Raising goats is a REAL job.

YES.. Paula.. I have been to the Joan Coolidge school for goat gals! LOL... I'm just happy she figured out a way to lay down without hurting her leg.. I too am afraid of what she and her already chubby dam are going to look like after 6 to 8 weeks of *SPECIAL* care.. LOL (and YES, you get hurt at my house and I will put you into your very own room, with a couch and room service LOL.. Sunny lived in the hospital room for 3 months..with a heater.. while recovering from entro, one winter)

Frosted Mini's..yes, it was VERY painful.. and she did get a local block..(I gave a dose & 1/2 of banamine on board with in 2 minutes of her getting hurt)..

I can't tell you guys how relieved I was when we got to the vet and started to work on her that BOTH ends of the BOTH tendons were still there - and not stuck up inside her knee or something... As soon I started to clean and I could see the tendons.. I didn't want to risk, not being able to still see them once we got to the vet's.. so I pulled up the flap of skin over the bone.. laid down cotton over the flap.. vet wrapped her from above the knee to the shin.. then DUCT TAPED it.. to make it IMPOSSIBLE for her to flex her leg and pull the tendons into her now swelling knee.. (let's just say the hot pink splint she has on now, is much prettier then her hilly billy duct tape she went with.. BUT.. it did it's job.. kept her knee from bending)
