If you have two bucks....
If you have two bucks, and you are taking one out of the buck pen to breed a doe, TIE UP THE OTHER BUCK.
Just sayin'.

Jess (my daughter) is our OFFICIAL buck mover.. I'm always amazed at how easily she steps into the buck pen (3 full grown in rut nubian bucks).. walks over with a collar to the one she wants to bring out for breeding.. and just as easily exists the buck pen.. which just the ONE she went in after.. after breeding .. again.. smooth as can be.. takes said buck back..the other two step back let him & Jess back in.. she takes off the collar and exits pen.. ALONE..
IF I were to try this.. I'd have bucks running amuck amuck.. here there and everywhere.. (heck, it's doubtful I'd even make it INTO the pen, they would probably just knock me out of the way and all take off for the does LOL).. I like that she's able to walk them THROUGH the entire doe herd.. to the breeding pen.. without them trying to blubber and jump every doe they pass..they just walk along beside her.. it's not like she's a big strong gal.. she's barely 5'1"... she just has a knack for working with them..even when she was big pregnant herself.. she's our very own buck whisperer LOL..(good thing, because I plan on going into next year's breeding season with 7 bucks, instead of 3!!!)

It was totally my fault. I didn't latch the gate behind the buck I took out. There was some jockeying for position, and one buck head butted the other, who dodged. I didn't see it coming.
Luckily, I was next to a solid fence, and I had my hand on the fence, so I didn't go down.
No major damage. Just a bruise.
Lesson learned, but I need to do some better planning.

I just decided to throw my bucks each into their own individual pens until everyone's bred; they irritate me too dang much. Hoping to be done in the next about 3 weeks, so then I'll stick 'em back together, and say have at it! Feed from the outside of their pen, and their wintering grounds has a year-round creek, that doesn't freeze, so don't even have to water them! Only handling I'll have to do is hoof trims now and then. I'm actually hoping to get 2 of the 3 sold after I'm done breeding, so if you know anybody looking for mini alpine buck...

I agree with all of the above. HOWEVER, for our peace and tranquility we put half of our girls with one of the bucks at one end of the property and the other half with our second buck at the other end of the property on roughly September 1st. They are Nubians and we pull the kids at birth to hand raise. We do miss breedings. It has happened. But it is so much more peaceful when each of the boys has his own harem for the months September to about January. We are both retired so we really do see most of the breedings and heats...it is usually pretty obvious! We mark dates and then go forward 18-22 days and watch to see if the girls show signs of coming back in. They mostly do not...although we have had a few appear to come back in and then deliver kids on the day that corresponds to the first breeding (not the apparent second). Again, small herd, we are at home and most importantly: there are other signs of impending birth than counting 155 days. It works for us and the goats are VERY peaceful and happy in their groups. We go in and out all the time with them and the boys have not given us any trouble at all. They act up worse prior to being put with their girls...always fighting with each other and pushing things around. Maybe it is just these two bucks.

Glad you didn't get hurt! DS is still tender with the colorful pattern on his leg after our buck incident. I'm just glad it wasn't worse.

I plan on having them in separate pens when I start utilizing my other bucks. I'm hoping to bring in another buck in the spring. Because everyone needs 4 bucks....

IndyGardenGal gets my vote for "most likely to beat Doug in purchasing goats"!! At least she will give him a run for his money. Anyone wanting more bucks is my kind of goat lady!!! lol

which reminds me..was talking to hubby today about our wy trip.. mentioned you might be having to air ship this time.. he said with me more then likely sending them out from St. Louis..(5 hours, each way).. that for gas money he would be fine with us just bringing them to you..I'd feel better about it...knowing they'll get to you in good shape with full tummies and a lot less stress..

That's fine by me. I just know that traveling at that time will be next to impossible for us. I am already prepping my sister with bribes to watch my kids so I can make the 6 hour round trip for the buckling. I really wanted a few more lines to incorporate into the herd to keep us from crossing certain lines too much.

We had four bucks, decided 3 was enough and just sold one. But I say if something good comes along, why not?

This is the same way I do it. Makes my life easier and I don't have to mess with my crazy boys very often.
