My friend does this often. The kids grow faster than full boers, but meatier than a saanen. She has a doe that is 50/50 saanen/boer, that she breeds back to a boer. The kids from that doe look quite meaty, and I'm guessing that using the dairy in the mother's breed, kids from her would get more milk, and therefore grow faster. Saanens don't have very high butterfat, so the first cross kids even though they are getting more total milk potentially, they might still grow about the same since there is less components.

When I was raising meat goats the Saanen/Boer Cross does bred to Boer buck had the fastest growing kids. The buckling from this cross were always the first to be picked by buyers for Easter.

Plus the does had great personality and mothering instincts.

Boer bucks are often crossed onto Dairy does for a great Terminal meat cross, doelings can be kept and bred back to boer or dairy depending on what you want but all the bucklings should go to the freezer as that's what the cross is for.

Saanen have a good long tall frame and lots of milk so when crossed with a Boer you get a pretty good marketable weather for meat sales or your freezer and the doelings can be milked and have better butter fat content than straight Saanen.

as always use the best possible Boer buck, there are a lot of junk boers out there being sold simply because they are white goats with red heads. sorry just a pet peeve of mine lol

We (Rabbitpatch and I) share a Kiko buck that we cross on our Saanen does. Haven't butchered any yet but we're happy with the growth rate thus far.

Are you planning on keeping the doelings?

Kiko have a strong Saanen influence in their history, you would probably get a pretty consistant progeny out of that cross, depends on what your breeding toward, meat or milk

We're breeding for both, really, hence the Kiko buck. I'll try to remember the meat yield number so I can tell y'all.
Yep, we each intend to keep a doeling (I think I'll keep one out of the Snubian/Kiko pairing....you watch! She'll throw bucklings!). Can't wait to see how this turns out.

I would be very interested in your yield numbers as well, since I now have a kiko buck don't have the saanen influence with my doe's though...

TRAILRIDER what are you feeding your goats????
