Trading a goat for chickens - what would you do?
I traded a dairy doeling for seven dressed farm raised chickens. The lady took possession of the doeling a month ago.
She called today and said she's going to let me have five chickens because they are big.
I'm feeling resentful.
What would you do?

I would tell her the barter agreement was for 7 chickens, size was not a qualifier- quantity was.

Recently I bought non gmo farm raised, dressed birds. They came out to $3.50 a lb.

I would tell her the agreement was for number of chickens, not lbs of chicken. She should either give the doeling back or give you 7 as promised.

Get everything in writing!!! And yes, remind her the deal was number of chickens, regardless of size. Sounds pretty sleazy to me for her to do that.

OK. It turned out better than I expected. She brought six, and I said casually, "OK, so I get one more when you butcher the next batch."
She replied, "Oh, we said seven?"
My reply, "Yessum."
So, all is right in my world again.

Tell her that 5 is fine, but you will be over for Sunday dinner for the next two weeks. And she is doing dishes.

Glad it worked out. I would have told her the agreement was for 7 as well. And get things in writing so that no one ends up feeling cheated. She could have totally forgotten what the agreement was, which isn't professional but is human.

I write stuff like that down, because *I* forget the details if I don't.
Often use email to confirm with participants as a reminder and a record.

The chickens are organically grown, plus she butchered and froze them.
Have you priced organic chicken? Good trade for a little doeling.

My chickens are free range. I raised them from eggs. I sold a dozen pullets yesterday for $100. My feed bill for my chickens was getting out of hand. Usually they sell for $12 each. I sell my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes for $20 each and my Golden Laced Wyandottes for $15 each. However the roosters sell for $5. I'm sure that's what you were getting. What does organically grown mean? I assume free range. Unregistered doelings in the 40 to 50lb range sell for $65 to $80 at the sale barn(or were last I checked). I wouldn't sell a dressed out chicken for less than $10 each. So basically you got $70 for your Doeling. Is that what she was worth?

Yes, Doug. That's exactly how we did the mental math when arranging the trade!!

If the chickens were organic, they bought some high dollar organic chicken feed for them, and I think you did get a good deal. Here chickens like that are no less that 20 dollars each. Just because a chicken is free range does not make it organic.

A free ranged chicken is not organic ??? What do you call high dollar chicken feed ?? Non gmo feed is cheap around here , A quick search brought back certified free range organic chicken 3.5-4.0 pounds for $27.99 each , I'm going to have to start putting out the fancy dinner ware and candles at our house on chicken night from now on ! "Honey would you please pass the Poulet a la riz " (chicken and rice !)

Do you not feed your free range chickens? Is your ground and everything on it organic for the last 7 years? Is your non gmo feed organic? Organic feed is non gmo, not sure about just non gmo. Organic feed here for chickens is 27 a bag plus shipping. Guess you live in a better chicken feed area...
