Nubian or Lamancha doeling?
Sooo we are looking at getting a friendly doeling to put in with our 2 wild little miniToggs (17 weeks old but never really handled, we are working on that).... Saw 2 possibilities one breeder has too many doelings to freshen in the spring so needs to place some now (they range in age from 5 to 7 months)- they are registered CAE free, bottle fed for CAE prevention..
Also someone else has 2 4H yearling doelings, la Mancha, registered and well handled by the kids...
Would it be better to go with the younger doelings to match the age of our current kids?
(we were interested in the la mancha breed as alittle hardier than the nubians but still pleasant and good milkers for the future)....
Feedback would be appreciated, thanks

I'd go with LaManchas, too.

Personally, as I love LaManchas, I'd go with the LaManchas. But then, I'm biased!

I like lamanchas, (and don't like nubians really) - but my more reasonable answer is to go with the better ones. Conformationally, health wise, and pedigree-wise. Ask them for information on the dams like udder pictures and production. Ask for their registration numbers and look them and their pedigrees up on ADGA genetics.

Honestly I want lamanchas too.
But the better breeder is the Nubian, these lamanchas are left over 4H projects the kids dont want anymore (they have been travelling around too).
The nubian person shows and breeds and milks. And has CAE clean papers on her does.
and heres the kicker- my daughter wants a goat with those cute floppy ears! (the kids came from a herd with a very people friendly Nubian and it just sold her on them)
I am little nervous about the Nubians from what I hear about them, I figure if I make sure and get papers at least her offspring will be easier to sell off (we will breed to a Nigerian buck b/c of the size of the other 2 does)...
I really do want a lamancha though.

I prefer nubians, but why not just get both. Problem solved

Truthfully, with this information I would go with the Nubians...not because I prefer them (which I do) but because of the health stuff. Why take the chance? It just isn't worth it for any reason. Get the friendliest one (as opposed to the one that is likely to be bossy) and maybe the smallest one (I would usually say the largest one!) so that she is not too big with your younger, mini-kids. The fact that your children like the ears will be a plus...but the HEALTH is the important factor for everyone...children and goats.

I would go with the Nubians in this case but I'm also biased & love Nubians. We raise the mini's so don't have the standard size but still basically the same other than size.

I really don't like nubians and because of the health testing, I think you should get the nubians.

Hiddensprings is right, BUT no matter what you get, look for healthy, well-bred stock.
I know that there are folks who would have only one breed, but I've seen Munchies and Nubes get along famously at Ozark Jewels.
Of course, as your daughter wants the prettier as well as productive goats, there's no reason why you shouldn't like to look at your livestock.

OH, and Nick says, "Those ears aren't just for pretty. They're great steering handles!"
He's right. <G>
