Doing hooves are one of my most hated goat chores, I would rather clean out stalls all day than clip hooves so I try to do mine in chunks rather than all at once . Call me lazy but I just HATE clipping hooves! I mainly feel like I never clip them properly even after 11yrs of owning goats and clipping hooves which in turn makes me feel like a failure .

So ladies take heart! I am 26 and even I don't clip all my animals hooves in one day! I just figure we are the smart ones right??

When I decide to do something, I do it all. I clip all the goat hooves or I copper Bolus everyone or I give them this or that. (Selenium vitamin E gel was the last thing) or I clean all the stalls and concrete. A couple of weeks ago, I clipped all of them one at a time. Everyone got some grain on the milking stand. I think I had 15 goats that day.

We clipped hooves today. The boys get done tomorrow, except Freezer Fred. He was clipped today, because he's Dolly's best friend.

Any wether destined for the freezer becomes Fred. It's from a Rodney Carrington song, "His name was, we I didn't know what his name was. So we just called him Fred."

This Fred gets to grow out longer, because Dolly isn't ready to be in with the big girls.

Well, I actually enjoy doing hooves now that I have my nice clipper. I simply place them on the milking stand (except my buck) and it becomes real easy to rest between goats. (Of course, I only have 3 milkers now. HeHeHe)

My buck is the hardest; but David does his. LOL

I don't mind trimming hooves. When I had over 30, I would break them down, so many a day for a few days. I do like to wait til it has been raining so the hoof is a bit softer.
Like seeing clean pens with fresh crisp straw, nicely trimmed hooves are quite satisfying.
God bless,
jd

I'm with jd on this one... I get a feeling of accomplishment when I do "mani pedis" for the goats. I love the look of their freshly done hooves.

Having sharp trimmers makes all the difference for me. I used to get blisters from doing only eight goats, and then my thumb joint would hurt for days afterward.

I don't use a stanchion, but I'm wondering if doing some on a stanchion, and some on the ground would prevent back aches because you'd be using different parts of your back, and not over using certain parts... ?

Either that, or you'd ache all over. :/

Oh I agree, sharp trimmers are so much better. I first used the bigger (don't know the brand names) and would get blisters. I do have big hands, but I finally bought the smaller ones (they have the orange or green handles) & it is such a difference.
I have also always used a stanchion when doing anything with my goats, clipping, trimming, milking, shots, etc. & would highly recommend one. My dh built it for me over 30 years ago out of 2x4s. It is wide enough for me to sit on when milking. Very stable. The legs are about six inches, the goats just step up on it. I probably need to replace the floor part (it's a bit soft in one spot) but it serves my needs quite well. I do have a rubber mat for them to stand on. I can take it out and wash it on a regular basis. For me, having the goats up is so much easier on me. I just sit on the side when trimming the front hooves and then put the back leg over my knee (with my foot on the stand) and trim away. And being just six inches off the floor, if they step off (like when they are jerking their foot out of my hand) it's not so far a step down for them.
Life is so good when there are goats in the barn.
God bless,
jd
