Lovely way to start the week.. NOT!
was a typical monday morning here.. UNTIL we saw Edge.. he had somehow ripped the skin off (as in de-gloved) 1/3 of the outer side of his left ear.. started near his head, and ended with a big wad of loose/torn off skin 1/3 of the way down... I thought about trying to take care of it myself.. (had everything I needed) BUT.. a cattle squeeze to hold him still.. SO, loaded him up.. headed to the new lady vet, Dr. Ann that we met when I took the 3 new boys in for a once over.. Edge was a perfect gentleman.. even if he is at the height of stinky.. he was friendly.. walked on his leash like a pro.. (wasn't super sure about that big yellow growling monster we wanted him to walk in to- the electric cattle shute/squeeze made a growling sound as it opened/closed).. but Jess just walked ahead of him and he followed behind like a puppy dog.. it took about 25 stitches to close.. once she scrubbed it out really good.. cut off dead tissue..scraped the ear it's self.. he never yelled or really fought us.. took almost an hour to fix him up.. once it was over.. he walked nicely back to the truck and loaded up.. it was so nice (and novel thing) to have a vet work on them, instead of me!!!.. she only charged us $40.. got to know her a lot better (we chatted while she sewed LOL).. she also gave us a CD&T booster to give him... he is now back home (he's on a go-round of antibiotics to be safe.. need to keep an eye on it.. (she told me I might have to drain it).. we gave him baking soda (to keep his tummies happy with the stress of the trip and procedure) sprayed it to keep the flies off and put him back in with the boys... (I think he must have stuck his head thru a cattle panel in a spot where they overlap.. making the opening smaller.. got his head stuck.. freaked and PULLED HARD.. getting out, but doing the damage to the ear in the process...just glad he's all pieced back together and ready to breed more does...

WOW. Lots of good things from one bad injury. Good to hear about the vet and her expertise!

she actually THANKED me for bringing him to her.. she says she really loves goats and likes the chance to work with them..
She also promised me if we ever have a middle of the night emergency she WILL answer the phone and will either come to us (or open the clinic for us, if we'd rather go to her)...

It is a real blessing to have a good vet handy, no doubt. I'm glad your bucky boy is okay.

So ENVIOUS <glowing green> but very happy for Edge. What a treat for you to have it taken care of for you, and so reasonably!

Oh no, I can just imagine your initial shock at seeing that! I had one doe with a similar injury from the dog attack last March. She had a strip from the middle of her face torn out and hanging over her nose. My vet was out of state and told me to do whatever I could (with all of the injured survivors) and he'd be there as soon as he got back into town the next day. We couldn't leave her like that, the tissue would die being exposed like that, so my husband and I cleaned it well with chlorhexidine, and superglued it back up. The vet saw it the next day and told us that we had probably saved her life doing that. Most of it healed, although some of it sloughed off leaving a fingertip size hole over one sinus cavity that may never close up. My husband calls her "blowhole".

Susie thanks, your lovely boys will re-build the herd, and having them here, getting ready for breeding next month has helped me (emotionally) too. This is the first time I've posted on the goat section of this forum because until now I just couldn't talk about my goats without an underlying sense of bitterness.

Karen.. you have handled the whole horrid event with much more grace then I ever would be capable of... my fear is that I wouldn't stop at just shooting the dogs.. afraid I'd be going after the owners too... (all this redheaded scottish blood gets me in trouble sometimes LOL)
