Saw this on the CL

Wanted you all to see and offer opinion...maybe I am wrong or just used to milking nubians but even my saanen's teets didn't look like this, Is this suppose to be the norm?

Definitely not. I wonder if she's been over-uddered a lot; lots of pressure and no place for the milk to go except the weakest point and stretched out her teats? She looks really full to me, poor girl.

I don't believe I'd pay that much. She looks like it could be difficult to get a good grip & milk her!

She may have had awkward cone shaped teats to start with, but I agree that she may have been over-uddered, and her teats "blew."

Definitely blown teats. I have seen quite a few obers with blown teats even as 2 year olds. It could be genetic since most I have seen are related.

If you're looking for goats in St. Louis there was a lady who would post there from Webster Groves. She also has the occasional cheese making class. I got a goat from her and all was well!

its not so much looking for ANOTHER goat cause I think I have plenty right now but only 1 is in milk, and NOW my DM has decided to make cheese's when I don't have that much coming in
I wish I could lease a milk goat from someone who has to many to milk but I wouldn't even know how to go about that or how much that would cost me.

that is must of been what happened to that one doe i re-bought and then sold again this year. she was an ober/saanen cross and her teats were way bigger than this even. longer and bigger around. she had super soft skin, but milking her was awful. never thought of blown teats, and knowing the situation, that jsut solved that question of why she was like this--her mother is one of my all time best/favs.

Blown tires I am familiar with, but not blown teats. I can imagine what they are, but what is the cause? What is "over-uddering"?

Letting her get too full with milk, the milk takes the path of least resistance, teats are that path...

Nick said she looks like they used cow inflations on her.

see it a lot in the ring, teats are only worth 2 points, so not as big of a deal as the rest of the udder and goat so to speak, wont catch me milking it

but aren't teats like this usually hooked to an udder that is horrible? i would think teats would matter more too, they can make or break a nice milker, to me anyhow.

and, the one I recently dealt with, the main reason to move her along again was those floppy things would get hit or something, every milking was tinged with pink. fine for calves, but not so much for my cereal or cheese making. eww.

We had one with a setup like that. She came that way. Wasn't as hard to milk as you'd think. After the first 5 or 10 squirts it was just like any other older animal. Lots easier than those tiny titted first timers that you had to do with a thumb and crook of your index finger!!!

But no, it's nothing you aim for getting.

Blown teats. I have seen a lot of big producers with teats like this. Three problems I see with this:

1. No baby goat is gonna have a big enough jaw to get it's baby mouth around those things, unless it has a severe jaw deformity.
2. My hands are pretty hefty and big (I've always said I have man hands.) and I have a hard time milking much smaller teats than that.
3. Seems a little uncomfortable for her....

But, if she was tested and I had an absolutely wonderful milking machine... and I had time to bottlefeed her babies... I might consider her... but not for so much money.

Nope Chewie, the blown teats I have seen are on some pretty udders. Like Cannon Farms mentioned before. They are only 2 points in the show ring. Milking them depends on the orfice size. There are a certain with blown teats I have hand made (for a friend) that were amazingly easy to milk. Smaller orfices and it was horrible.
