That Stink

What's all the fuss about how the bucks smell? It's strong but I don't dislike it. Matter of fact I like it. Maybe I'm weird. I also like the smell of skunk. I think that may be from back in the day and a natural herb that grows like a weed in the hills of Northern Arkansas.

I also kinda like the skunk smell, though, uh, not for the same reasons, so I wonder if I'd be at least partially immune to buck stink...hmmm...

That pic's hilarious. hahaha.

If you don't mind the buck smell, you have very young bucks!

It doesn't bother me, either. Yes, I can smell it, but it's not offensive to me.

They're odiferous but to me it's just part of raising goats. I like my boys, stinky or not.

Though if I recall, you have young bucks only. Wait till their first 'good' rut. First year ruts are never very strong. Our bucks are down a hill behind our house, and you can smell them when you pull in the driveway.

I am one of the weirdos too... it's a very strong but its not offensive. I really think humans have become very far removed from natural scents and label them 'smells' which has a negative connotation. But that is my opinion

They are young but dad has always raised goats. He don't like the stink but I always liked it.

Is "Oooo, that smell" coming from bucks natural musk scent or is he urinating on himself? or both? I like the smell of my musky rams, but they don't pee on themselves either. I may change my view on bucks, but I haven't come across a mature buck yet that smelled of a pleasant musk and not "can't you smell that smell?" offence. Just wondering if in deed it is that bad or is good husbandry practice a plus? ~Chris

The smell never bothered me either. Always left my buck loose in the yard for the door to door salesman as a scratching post for the buck because he liked rubbing up against people that was dressed up.

My buck now lives at a farm 4 miles from here.

Mac is so stinky, he can peel paint off the side of a barn. Even seasoned goat folk have said his smell is particularly pungent. That Stink - Goats

I agree. While I don't care for the smell of a skunk-it doesn't curl my toes. I've got two bucks here and one is an older fellow-the other just two-and they are getting ripe .... but it doesn't make me ill. I was out there this morning and Zubu was following me around - all stinky but I think it's sweet. I try to imagine being a girl goat and have a greater appreciation for his scent.

I hate it. I think bucks reek and my biggest peeve is the stench gets into my nose and I can still smell it two weeks later. We have me buck now and after the deeds are done I'm considering freezer camp. He stinks and he's a butt head.

Once I had to go get a buck rag from a friends buck. Knowing I had errands to run after I was super careful not to touch him. I had latex gloves on and rubbed the rag on his chin put it in a jar and sealed the lid. Rubber gloves went into the trash and I washed my hands with Dawn and changed my jeans even though I never touched him. Went to the feed store and the lady at the counter says "whooee something smells like buck"! It was me!!
Needless to say I rarely handle bucks unless absolutely positively necessary

I sure can smell it but I don't really mind it. The only thing I mind is after I change out of stinky clothes, get a shower, into new clothes and I can still smell it. That is the only time it bothers me. And then its only because *other* folks are going to smell it.

I can still smell it too after showering but I let them rub all over me. They are both very spoiled.

When bucks are not in rutt, I can still smell a slight tang on the boys if I look for it closely. That is their natural musk I think. But the smell during breeding season is mostly the urinating on themselves bit. When their chests and legs are black with pee gunk, it is just going to smell plain and simple. Its very much an individual thing. Some bucks just go into harder rutt than others. And competition always makes it worse. My bucks who have several other bucks around them always smell worse than the years I have had just one or two bucks.

Yeah I was giving a good scratch around the base of the horns (Buck was penned) and he took a Pee break.... On his head, directly on the area I was itching for him!

Ive got a 5 month old and an 8 month old. That 5 month old is rutting hard and peeing all over himself and his hair on his back is always standing on end. The older buck is not near as excited and is slow about his mating. The younger one tries to mount anything and everything that will stand still for him.
