shots

So I am wanting to give shots to our goats next spring. They will have first kids in April or so ( hopefully). So can I just get the CD&T kit from Hoeggers? Does anyone else use this. I was told a fee weeks before they kid, is that right? Thanks.

Thought it was right after they kid. I've got to start writing everything down.

I give my does' their CD & T shots 3-4 weeks before they kid that way the kids get some immunity from it also until they are old enough that I give them their CD & T shots, usually at 6 & 9 weeks of age.

I don't know what the kit is, or why one is necessary. And Jeffers is likely cheaper than Hoeggers, to be truthful.

I use Colorado Serum brand CDT vaccine. You want to use the TOXOID, not the ANTITOXIN. Antitoxin is given to animals suffering from disease as an attempt to save them. Toxoid is the vaccine.

This one: http://www.jefferspet.com/essential-...IV/cp/0028326/

I vaccinate all incoming animals when they arrive.

I use 3ml luer lock syringes and 20ga x 1" needles. I usually give it in the muscle on 'keeper goats', and subcutaneously on meat goats. You can use the thigh or the neck muscle for the IM shots. Thigh muscle is more valueable for meat, so neck is preferred if possible - but not easy on small young kids.

I booster the does 4 weeks pre-kidding. I also trim hooves and give copper boluses and BoSe at this time. Studies show in cattle/sheep that giving BoSe to the dams is probably more effective than giving it to the babies at birth for preventing WMD. Vaccinating the does pre-kidding causes them to boost their production of antibodies, which they will then incorporate into their colostrum and thus give their offspring passive immunity.

The kids are vaccinated at 4 and 8 weeks of age, here. I vaccinate and give Baycox/dewormer at 4 weeks. Booster and deworm at 8 weeks, which is when I wean many of my boers.
