Cryptosporidium

Great! Went and had a fecal done at the vet because I saw eyelids getting a little lighter than I would like. She said the only thing that was in the fecals was crypto. Wonderful! NOT!

I have no idea where it came from or how long it has been there but this is the first time it has ever showed up on a fecal examination so obviously not very long.

I knew nothing about it so the vet told me this:
It does not normally hurt adult animals. They can be infected or carriers but it rarely casues symptoms in adults but the mortality rate in kids is high. It causes diareaha and there is nothing is they can do. It is resistant to antibiotics. The only thing they can do is supportive therapy like electrolytes and lactated ringers.
Hannah is the one who showed crypto on the fecal. Hazel is the one who just had a bout of the runs. But she said since it responded to the biomycin and neomycin that it likely was not crypto related. She said Hannah is the carrier most likely. She said that even if she showed a negative fecal that we can not assume she is negative since she once was postive. It can go dormant but they can still be carriers.

She said it will not be killed by bleach but hydrogen peroxide will kill it. The problem is that we have dirt floors and of course the patures. She said I could have them off the property for years but it will still be in the ground. It is contagious to cattle I know but I am not sure about horses or other livestock. I assume sheep would be a no no too.

So idk what to do. Any incoming animals will have to build up an immunity. Bringing outside kids in is a no no since they probably would have the hardest time with it. I definately don't want to take animals to anyone... I don't know what to do.

Oh yeah.... and it is contagious to humans so I have to be careful when handling them. I just want to give up. Is this a sign?

Wow. I am so sorry I would research the heck out of it and get another opinion. I lived in Milwaukee when the whole city was hit with crypto from the water supply. It is not fun. Every time you ate something it went right thru. We had to boil the water for weeks. No mention was ever made about it living in the soil or getting it from other people. Hopefully it's not as bad as you were told. Sending hugs your way!!

Thanks, I sure hope it isnt as bad as I make it out to be. The vet did not sound all that discouraged. My problem is the incoming and or outgoing animals. I can't ethicly sell a kid to anyone. And that is how I help pay for the goats... It is not a life sentence obviously but definately limiting on what I should or should not do.

Doing some research, but the first site I found said to treat with a coccidia med and to spray infected areas with ammonia.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2245367

This website makes statements that leads me to believe that goats with impaired immune systems are vulnerable, and strong/healthy goats are not.

We flooded a few years ago and I lost all but 5 goats so I lost 39 goats under the age of two. Madsaw aka Bob on the cattle boards know how to deal with it. His vet has a medication that he offers and bob said it works great. Not many vets know this. I will go threw bob if I ever deal with it again instead of loosing so many goats.

Crypto is ubiquitous. Everywhere. Like the cold germs, staph, etc. Your farm is not toxic.

This link has more options on treating the environment where the sick goat was located.

Oh by the way, I haven't had any issues with it besides bringing home a calf with it since then. Your animals are ok to sell

Oh another FYI crypto spreads to humans and is very hard on children with weak immune systems.

Okay thanks guys! I feel so much better. She made it sound to me something equivalent to CL. I am just gonna watch them closely and cross my fingers that the kids will be okay. Would itbe bbetter to hand raise them to limit their exposure or leave them on her so they develop immunities?

Thanks for that information. I made sure my sister knows to keep my nephew who currently has the chicken pox away from the goats.

As I read this thread. I sighed heavily at the results that everyone came up with. Whew!!! Vets sure can be negative people.

Yeah she was trying to be helpful and let me know what it is all about. Maybe I just took it too literally. But I am glad to find out all this other information.
