Unhappy Bloat... STINKS!!

Night before last, the gate on the goat pen didn't get latched tightly... Usually the milk room is shut with sliding glass doors, but for some reason one door was left open.

We woke up yesterday morning to stripped trees, all of this year's doelings in the feed and two of our adult does bloated and gone. They were still flexible. It was horrible! We figure the herd got out early in the morning and the majority of the adults went to the trees, the two adult does gorged themselves until they started to feel bad and then left the feed to the doelings. The doelings had no issues at all, so we caught them not too long after they started their turn at eating themselves to death .

The individual who left the gate open feels horrible. The person who left the milk room open feels horrible. I am still numb and not saying anything since I don't want to make those two persons feel worse... This is the first time something like this has happened here...

Bloat stinks! We lost our wonderful girl, Pepper, dam to Oat's Belly Bean and Donna's G-Mo and her niece, Wild Thyme.

Thank-you. It is hard. Especially for the two who made the decisions or forgot/ neglected to make sure that things were locked up. I doubt it will happen again, it was not a fun learning experience!

What a good mom you are and that is the most important part of this, I think. So sorry such hard lessons have to be learned in such a good family. My grandson was six when he locked his pal (a Beagel puppy) inside a car with all the windows rolled up in the very hot summer. We had no idea where the pup was and when we finally found her it was too late. My grandson was confused by her death and uncertain of what it was that he had done to cause the death...very difficult but it has added tremendously to our relationship over the years. We loved him right through the pain and you are obviously doing the same. Blessings.

I am so sorry to hear about your losses. That is a hard way to learn some valuable lessons.

On another note. If you haven't already, talk to your vet about getting some thera-bloat to keep on hand. While it wouldn't have helped your senior does this time, in other cases it is a life saver. Literally.

I am so sorry! I know the two feel very very bad! I'm grateful your not lashing out. I got to see a mother berate her boy today in public. It was so painful to watch. Nothing he did was correct or good enough for her.
Their guilt is going to be immense. Please when your anger subsides hold them am forgive them. I know its hard to do but it's so important.

You must always forgive. Offenses will kill you. Google the institute of self worth. With Vic Porter.

Sorry this is totally off subject. Preaching is bred into me. I can't help it.

I know. I am not angry - just sad. I know that both of them feel much worse than I do. Mistakes happen, and this was an unfortunate combination. Either mistake alone would probably not have had the extreme consequences this did...

Life's lessons are sometimes so hard!

How awful, my heart breaks for your grandson - but it is encouraging to hear that these painful lessons can be turned to good.

Best phrase I ever heard was " the hardest person to forgive is ones self" man is that not the truth!
Doug that is so true! Unforgiveness is killing my mother and it crippled her mother. I feel bad for them. To hold on to anger is like drinking posin from a serpent!

I'm sorry that you lost your dear goats. And I'm sorry that the results of two small slips acted together to cause so much misery. Hugs to you and to the ones who feel so bad.
I can't think of the number of times in my life that I forgot to shut a gate or latch a door or forgot to water but luckily for me the worse that happened is a fright for me.
When you think about how many chances each day there is to do something that has awful consequences, it's amazing that we get through a day in one piece.

Oh no I am so sorry. She will live on through her kids and grandkids. I know how horrible it is to lose one. I miss GMo daily. Only thing that has kept me from totally losing is seeing all his daughters and sons out in our pasture. Big hugs to you and the family.
