I love nice looking bucks

I haven't talked about it at all, but I really enjoyed the time I spent at Oldesouth Farms when I went late last spring to pick up the two does and buck I purchased from Terri Babbs. She has some of the best bucks I've ever seen. It was at the start of the showing season, so all the boys were trimmed up nicely and that helped. But those boys literally took my breath away. The two that stick in my mind were flashy FLASHY Gypsy Moon Sudoku and gorgeous, sleek Blue Blanc Saber.

Our little Prima Donna is out of a Gypsy Moon Sudoku and Sweet Donna. She is just getting better and better as she grows up and I will get new pictures soon.

Our little herd sire, Espresso, is still just goobery sweet. We bred him to Babette this week and I'm expecting some nice light creamy kids out of those two.

I'm seriously thinking about buying some straws of semen from Blue Blanc Saber to AI my saanen doe. Here is a picture of that buck from Oldesouth's web site. What do you all think?

If anyone in Virginia likes this buck I'm most likely going to order straws in October. 1/2 straw would be $12.50 and one straw $25.00. I think that is one heck of a deal for a buck with this much potential and this good of a line. If you are interested let me know.

Are you talking about a 1/4cc straw vs. 1/2cc straw? I don't understand the 1/2 straw vs. 1 straw reference.

That is a really good question. I am not sure of the size of the straws, it just states for this buck it is $125 for 5 straws. I know that it is common when doing AI with Jersey cows to split straws, half a straw being adequate for insemination. I assumed it was the same with goats but I could very well be mistaken. If anyone can answer that question that would be great.

I've never heard of it being done in cows (which admittedly, I have no experience in) but not in goats, either. Once thawed, you should NEVER re-freeze semen. Place an entire straw.

They do split straws for Jerseys. Not to thaw and refreeze, but to use. That is why I was asking if anyone in VA is interested. I don't think it would be that difficult to coordinate AI in October. If I do buy these I'll be having the AI tech come to my barn at that time.

Semen is not refreezed. A straw can be split between 2 - 3 cows.

I have been to many AI clinics and read a lot of material and done AI myself. (I have my own tank and equipment.) I have NEVER heard anyone discuss or suggest using half a straw on a goat and then using the same equipment to inseminate another doe. Some folks that I know use 2 straws! One at one time and another 8-12 hours later.

Hey, Yarrow, have you and COSO used half straws??

This thread kinda got . I'm still purchasing 5 straws from this buck in October. That is 3 more than I need. If anyone in Virginia wants to go in with me on these straws - 3 will be available at $25 each. He is a blue eyed, blue Nigerian Dwarf buck from awesome lines. Let me know.

I too have never heard of it..??? .. (we plan on doing TWO straws on Gloomy.. just to make sure we get babies!) I'll ask Ken (my dairy science guy) next time I talk to him..he's Ai'd hundreds upon hundreds of cows & goats.. if he says yes, I'll get the details and post them.

I wouldn't call this hi-jacked! You were suggesting SELLING "half" a product and folks with some goat AI experience were asking questions about it. Not off-topic.

He's a nice looking guy! In fact I had been on that site a couple days before you posted the pics. Good luck to you on your sales and AI!

Right. But I was asking about thoughts on this buck and if anyone else was interested in using him. This has got way off topic with talk of straw splitting. That is beside the point. I'm not suggesting anyone HAS to split straws, just thought it was an option. NVM. I don't care if I have to eat the full $125 for this buck's semen. Thought I'd just give someone else an opportunity to utilize this fella without having to shell out the full amount for 5 straws - the minimum they will sell. But whatevah.
