Shredding green corn stalks

Hi all,

Last year after the corn stalks dried in the garden I used my shredder and made quick work of all the stalks and a nice pile of mulch that I left to compost in the garden.
I had planned to give the stalks to my goats but they simply had no interest in dried corn stalks

I've been harvesting my corn and noticed that when I threw in green stalks, the goats ate the leaves and tips but not the stalks.

Today I was shredding green stalks, just to clean out the garden somewhat. I ground up a half a mineral tub when I thought to offer it to my goats. They love it, but......I took it away, what if it's not good for them?

It's the entire stalk, leaves, flowers, and corn that was too small to harvest.

I used my leaf/branch shredder/mulche. It worked fantastic but I wanted to know, is it safe for goats to eat it?

Thanks for any input

It's fine to feed the goats corn stocks. Mine love them and I just throw the stocks over the fence, but they will not eat dried corn stocks

Mine won't eat the stalks when they are whole, they eat the leaves off but walk all over the stalks, just makes a mess.

The shredded stalks and all are moist and look like grass clippings from the lawn once they go through the shredder. I did stalks small cobs leaves flowers..the whole thing. Just want to make sure they won't bloat on it.

thanks,
Tam

I guess just leave out the baking soda and make sure they have something else full in their bellies before feeding the ground up stalks. I got a few bales of dried stalks last year. The only goats that would touch them were the pregnant does. After freshening they wanted nothing to do with them.

Mine eat standing stalks, dry no problem.

A little bit of green corn stalks won't hurt them, but go slow. Also, don't store it - you probably aren't making good silage and goats are very prone to getting listeria, which loves to grow in fermented feeds.

Thanks all for your replies. They enjoyed their snack and they are all doing wonderful.

I won't let it ferment, I was all set to build up my compost, what they didn't eat is on the compost pile.
