Study in the effect of baking soda in diet & milk

I found a study on adding baking soda to the diet of goats...
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...2203028282153X
Excerpt: the bicarbonate diet caused an increase in fat content and total solids content of milk.

Interesting.

Nothing suprising here. A leading cause in milk fat depression is chronic acidosis and altered (lowered) rumen pH and thus altered rumen fermentation. Extremely common in high production, high carb intake animals.

The feed mix I was using contained a decent amount of Bicarb. I had extremely rich creamy milk, but, never had anything BEFORE to compare it to!
