Lets talk vaccinations
Ok. Ive jumped into the Goat business. I traded for 3 more this afternoon. I know have 7 nannies. 2 doelings and 2 bucklings. I have dosed everyone with a coccid prevention. I gave everyone a dose of prohibit and I gave everyone a copper bolus today.(that was harder than I thought it would be) All my goats seem to be getting healthier and healthier. I don't want to miss anything. What do I need to vaccinate for? Is CDT the only thing I need to do? Does everyone vaccinate?

I am glad you asked this Doug, I had the same thought earlier today. I read a post about someone giving rabies vacs. I have never seen anything about that anywhere before and I was wondering what vaccines are most commonly given.
I so far have only been giving CDT, because that is all that I have info on.
Great question!

I saw the rabies vaccine but if your area doesn't have rabies its not really necessary. Or at least that's what Ive read.

I think your #1 priority at this point is to pull blood and test ALL the goats you have (who haven't already been tested) for CAE.. (we use BioTracking.. quick, reliable, great customer service)... CL is your other biggie.. neither are diseases you want in your new herd.. much easier to start out clean and stay clean.. (the buckling you will be getting from me will be CAE Neg/CL free.. plus G6S Normal.. important, since you have nubians.

If you are going to vaccinate, then start with CD&T. Unless you have a specific reason to vaccinate for something else, DON'T. Most things that people vaccinate for can be avoided by proper management. Since you just starting out, concentrate on care and health. Only add more vaccines if you have an unavoidable need.

Goats *can* get rabies but it's extremely rare and it's not like a rabid goat is going to bite everybody and spread it around... IMO, it's a waste of time/money.
We do CDT here, and we did Fusoguard for the first time last year. Fusoguard is for hoof rot.
Here is our boostering regimine:
First CDT/fusoguard at 4 weeks of age. For meat stock, give it sub-q (It may cause a localized abscess or lump at injection site, but it is better for meat quality), for keeper stock give it in the neck muscle or the leg muscle if you want to avoid unsightly abscesses.
Rebooster at 8 weeks of age.
Doelings and doe herd are vaccinated 1 month before they kid. At this time I also give Copper and BoSe. Vaccinating does a month before they kid is strategic - the does will produce antibodies and pass immunity through their colostrum to their young kids - this will get the kids through till their first booster. I usually give the bucks thiers at the same time because I'm thinking of it.
I usually booster new animals off the truck if I don't now vaccination history or know the previous owners well.
If I were you, I'd booster them all now. Then I'd do the does again 1 month before they kid.

Ok. CDT tomorrow if Orchelin has it. Monday if they don't. I have one that will kid in 2 months.
Do I wait a month or go ahead since I just got her?
Second question, Whats the withdrawal time for milk?

Wait & give her the CD & T a month before kidding. No milk withdrawl time for that vaccine.
I only do CD & T vaccine here myself. I don't feel the need for any others at this time.

Remember that vaccines are no good if they freeze or get warm. I take mine out in a container of ice when vaccinating my herd. And I don't keep it on the top shelf of the fridge so it has no chance of freezing. If you ever forget to pop it back into the fridge, toss it and buy new.

If I remember, I'll try to take pictures of my equipment storage areas... I have like 93 locations over the property that store my livestock equipment. It's not all for goats... but a lot of it can be used on several species. There's 12 years of equipment ammassed and probably a good few thousand dollars, lol. Each thing doesn't cost that much but I have a lot, and a lot of things that get 'used up' and need replaced.

I got a new big cupboard for mine this year & I still have a cupboard in the barn & stuff in the basement. I guess my cupboard could be a little bigger(it's really an wide antique Pie safe).

Doug, if you're in Mt Home, you do need to consider rabies vaccs. There's a fairly high incidence of rabies in your area.
Check with your ag agent, ask to see the morbidity/mortality numbers for rabies. There should be a quarterly report with that info.

No kidding I will. I know we have skunks that carry rabies but never heard of a goat carrying it. I did know of a cow having it back about 35 years ago.
