Price for milk?

I have recently had a few people contact me in search of goat milk. What is a decent price? I have found herd-shares around here that charge 55 per month for a gallon a week. I figure at 4 gallons per month, that's $13.75 and at 5 gallons, the price drops to $11.00.

Does that seem comparable to your area? What would you charge? I don't want to price it too high but I am also not willing to give it away for too cheap. It costs a lot of money to feed and care for these goats, not to mention the time commitment of milking and such.

It's $12/gallon around here. I figure there is no real way to charge for time; I just try to make enough off the milk to keep the goats well fed. The rest, to me, is therapy and a hobby.

Here most folks get between $6.00 & $8.00 a gallon. I don't know what people with goat shares pay.

I wish Virginia would get off their high horse and let us sell raw milk - would sure make it more cost effective to feed the critters

We do 25.00 month and that gets people a gallon per week. Ours is way cheaper than the store, even.

When I lived where I could sell milk, I sold it for $8 a gallon with my jar, $5 if they provided their own jar. I much preferred them to supply their own jar so I was more than willing to offer a discount for it.

I am also in Indiana & you can not legally sell raw milk from your farm. A herdshare would be ok. I wouldn't charge more than $6 a gallon if it were me. I think some of the prices people charge are insane!

Before our own goats started giving milk we were in a herd share program and paid $35 a month which gave a gallon a week.

Wow! That's insane! Here it is $8-10 per week which gets you 1 gallon. I can't imagine paying $35 for a gallon of anything. Here in Virginia you can sell raw milk marked for animal consumption only, and I believe that is still $8-10 per gallon.

We've been selling it for $8/ gallon for animal consumption.
At first I was encouraging people to bring their own jars, but now...i just ask them to bring MINE back so I can sterilize them properly...

I know that even though I say "FOR ANIMAL CONSUMPTION ONLY" people tend to take that with A "WINK WINK" and they go ahead and drink it....

One of my egg customers came with a jar that looked and smelled like he had just dumped 40 year old rusty nails out of it...ugg...even if he was going to feed it to his chickens...YUK....

last thing I need is for him to go telling people my milk smelled or taste like old nails......
& you know that would happen!!

any hoo...yea...$5-$10/ gallon here in Maine
