Broken Horn

My 6 month old wether who was disbuded, but grew a attached horn has broken the end of it off. He seems fine and its stoped bleeding. Do I need to do anything for him? With all this rain and mud I don't want it to get infected.

I always spray blue Kote on it personally.

I'm assuming you are talking about a scur. Mine broke theirs off several times.

You also have to watch that flies don't lay eggs in the wound.

Never had a problem, and scur breaks are fairly common when ol' stinky boy is in rut.

He's moving this weekend, I hope. Have to finish the repairs on the trailer, then it's over the hill and not-so-far away for Kalimac Randybuck!

I'd just keep an eye on it.

This isn't a scur. The scar is beside the horn. It was growing like a normal horn. He just looked like a unicorn. My doe is horned. It is like hers, but he only has one minus the end. I will Blue Kote it and watch for flys. Do I need to watch for anything else

Might be a good time to hit it with a hot iron again and stop the growth. Not a fun job, but horns on a domestic goat are just trouble AFAIC.

Hm. Well, purulence, funky stink, arterial bleeding...

I'm sure he'll be fine.

I've never re-burned, so I don't know how that works. I'm sure someone will share if they have an opinion on it. (Someone on the goat forum with an opinion? HA!)

I don't have a hot iron.... Not getting in a horn debate. I only have two a ND wether and a ND/_Pygmy doe. I have to worry more about them running in the house or getting in my lap than them horning us. He is doing fine this am sporting his punk rocker doo.

At 6 months old I wouldn't re-burn now. Blue Kote will be fine & make sure no flies lay eggs in it like above poster said.

I've reburned them, it works if the scur will fit in the cup. I now realize that's not the issue here, but it does work.

I didn't realize that the tip of a horn had blood vessels and could bleed.
