emergency ...

Posted on "emergency" STICKY but no one answered and half an hour has gone by; so thought I'ld try here before going to another forum.

Woke to young LGD pup barking, which is quite unusual. Discovered a young doe (5 month old) yelling in barn. Found she was periodically letting off a yell as though something was wrong as she would act like she had a stiff neck and push her nose into the air as she turned her neck a little. She also has a dark tongue.

No fever and no signs of being bitten. Can move around but chooses not to.

Is a large Nubian and has been browsing with rest of small herd and appearing healthy with good weight on her. She is being weaned by her mother.

Have no idea what is wrong or what to do and suggestions/information would be appreciated. Will check back soon to see if anyone has responded.

I'd give Fortified B Complex and watch for any other clues as to what's wrong. The B complex won't hurt anything but might help.

Tetanus.. maybe?

If it were my doeling, I'd start PenG, Banamin and Vit B.....

I hope someone else logs on and has some advice.

I would try to get some activated charcoal into her in case she ate something she shouldn't have eaten.

If you don't have any on hand the pharmacy should have some or the pet department will have it in the aquarium supplies.

Good luck.

Ditto on the above. The dark tongue concerns me, if this is not her normal tongue color. Torsion of the neck is also a symptom. Call the vet and ask about blue tongue.

Is she up to date on her CD & T vaccines? Any other symptoms?

Thank you all for helping. I just checked on her and found the lower part of her right cheek has swollen a bit; so I am thinking she got stung by a bumble bee as they are plentiful here. She is now eating a bit of grain with her dam, is not yelling nor is she pushing her head up and to one side. (Not sure if the color of her tongue is normal or not as have never looked to see what color it was prior to this.) I think my little LGD pup caught the disturbance in the barn quickly, woke me and I got out there to see her reaction to being stung...I think!

Don't believe it is "blue tongue" as there is no fever or salivation and no swelling (that I can tell) of her tongue.

If she is does not go out with the herd this morning as usual, I will give her some Vit B Complex and a bit of activated charcoal. These certainly won't harm her and could be of help to her body. I don't like to use antibiotics and won't unless I need to. (I do have a variety in the fridge just in case.)

Sounds like Bee sting. A lot of bee's this year. Hoping she's OK in a little bit but she might not want to eat a lot until the swelling & soreness goes away.

I've watched mine get stung after eating too close to ground nesting yellow jackets.

I hope that's all it is.
