The future of CAE genetic susceptibility testing
I received this from the Cornell List-serve today, exciting news:
"Many sheep breeders are familiar with drawing a sample of blood and being able to test their individual sheep's genetic code and potential for scrapie susceptibility (those RR, QR, and QQ discussions you might have seen)
Here is a recent scientific article about an effort to be able to do something similar and find out if your sheep (and in the future goats hopefully!) are lentivirus susceptible or resistant. This would be Ovine Progressive Pneumonia in sheep and Caprine Arthritic Encephalopathy in goats."
As the writer says, this could be exciting for herd management and marketing strategies.
