Nubians, Anemia and Hydrops Fetalis?

Since writing about the yearling doe I lost on Saturday, I've talked to at least 4 other people who have had goats die with the exact same symptoms, the main one being severe anemia that comes on, literally, overnight. In every single instance, the goat lost has been a Nubian doe (or doeling). In addition, one person lost twin doelings within a week of each other, and the dam of those doelings gave birth to a normal kid and a kid with hydrops fetalis this year. The really strange part is that the dam of the yearling *I* lost ALSO gave birth to a kid (a single) with hydrops fetalis this year!

"Hydrops fetalis usually stems from fetal anemia..."

Could there be another genetic flaw lurking out there that has not yet been discovered?

There could be another genetic problem out there. Not much research is done with goats.

Found this on DGI - is this Hydrops fetalis? Never seen that before (humans or otherwise... ) http://www.dairygoatinfo.com/f19/eve...-photos-20833/

Wow - person said they sent it to Texas A&M and if you read through the comments, supposedly there was someone with 11 kiddings with similar kids. So weird. A genetic link is brought up, by the way. Worth a good read.

I would rule out viral cause first. Any virus that replicates in the blood cells can cause anemia and hydrops fetalis. That is more plausible than a genetic cause.

Also, in humans hydrops fetalis is often caused by Rh incompatibility. I don't know if goats are the same.

Common bacterial and viral causes of hydrops fetalis in humans are Toxoplasmosis, CMV (Cytomegalovirus) infection, Parvovirus infection, and Syphilis.

  • Immune hydrops fetalis is a complication of a severe form of Rh incompatibility. Rh compatibility causes massive red blood cell destruction, which leads to several problems, including total body swelling. Severe swelling can interfere with how the body organs work.
  • Nonimmune hydrops fetalis occurs when a disease or medical condition disrupts the body's ability to manage fluid. There are three main causes for this type: heart or lung problems, severe anemia (thalassemia), and genetic defects, including Turner syndrome.

Some causes in humans are genetic. Hydrops can have more than one cause. It is basically a result of a disease, not a disease itself.

Ok first I just had someone on my FB goat group that had a doeling with hydrops fatalis born a couple days ago. Hers was Nigerian. It is not uncommon in dogs either.

Second Cyngabald posting that info, I have Turners Syndrome so it's weird knowing that I could have had Hydrops.

I am thinking this might have been what my ND had this spring. It was really weird. It was very filled with fluid, weighing 5# 7oz and had all it's hair. The other 4 kids were fine. I did take a photo but not sure about posting it.
