Ugh...CL and neighbors' goats

My new Amish neighbor decided he needed some goats to clear his brushy pasture. So, he went to the auction and bought 6. I was just back there a little while ago, and saw that one Lamancha has a bald round spot on her chest...I'm assuming from a CL lump. Am I probably correct in my assumption? There are two Nubian bucklings, a Saanen in milk (skinniest thing I've ever seen in person), the Lamancha and her doeling, and one other that I didn't see. He doesn't have good fencing up yet, so they are all tied along the fence row.

So, my question is...what do I need to do to keep my girls safe from diseases from them? Obviously, I won't let him walk in our pasture, but he's down here often to use the phone, so he will be in the yard.

I think it depends on where it is on her chest. Is it at the top of her leg or near the center? I've had goats get a bald spot from an insect sting or from rubbing up against the fence trying to reach the greener grass on the other side. If she was in the auction, who knows how she was penned up and how she might have injured herself. If it is an old dried up bald spot, I would ask to examine her to see if there are any more lumps that might be CL and haven't burst yet. My understanding is that it is the pus that infects the ground. Until I knew for sure what it was, I would make him leave his shoes at the end of the driveway or step into a shallow pan of bleach. I guess that might not come across as "neighborly" though

I think I'd be more worried about the goat getting loose and coming onto your property though. Maybe its time for an old-fashioned fence raising party...

The spot is between the top of her leg and the middle of the chest. It looks like a perfectly round spot...about the size of a quarter. I'm freaked out and don't think I could get up the guts to touch her!

Do you have a good talking relationship with the neighbor?

Yes. They have only been here since the middle of April, so we don't know them REALLY well, but we like them a lot. My hubby is even working for them an hour or so a day running the loader (they built a sawmill and need him to put logs on it for the next day's work...they don't own the loader, aren't allowed to run it, but need it for their work...the person who owns the loader pays the operator). I tried to inform them about CAE and CL before they bought the goats, but they either didn't listen, didn't believe me, or didn't care.

I'd print out some CL info and the drawing and bake some muffins and go over for a visit. The disease can be spread by flies (according to the research vet at MSU.) Your neighbors need to know more about what they are doing. It can spread to their horse, pigs, etc.

And raw milk possibly infecting the people who drink their milk, I think taking them info is a good idea. I'd put up a double fenceline if my neighbors had goats - a buffer zone. If those goats get loose, they'll likely make a beeline for other goats, unfortunately.

Unfortunately every time a goat gets an abscess, the first thing the owner is bombarded with is lectures on CL (CASEOUS LYMPHADENITIS) caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis ; and the goat owner dealing with this abscess immediately is frightened into culling the goat. There ARE abscesses which are NOT CL! Please make sure to do your research and look at pictures of CL and really look at the goat in question before taking this to your neighbor, you really would not want to cause issues with a neighbor over a misunderstanding. Shalom!
